Thomas "Tom" Green Dill, Sr.

January 19, 1922 - September 29, 2023

Tarboro, North Carolina - Thomas "Tom" Green Dill, Sr., age 101, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023. Born in Craven County, NC on January 19, 1922, he was the son of the late Alonzo Thomas Dill, Sr. and Clara Maria Green Dill. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Ann Sloan Fountain Dill; his son- in-law, Randall W. Lee; his sisters; Sara Meadows Dill and Harriet Green Dill; and his brothers; Green Redmond Dill and Alonzo Thomas Dill, Jr.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Tom served as a Lieutenant in the Central Pacific during World War II aboard USN LST (Landing Ship, Tank) - 1050 as a LST Officer. Prior to his naval service, he attended UNC Chapel Hill where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Law in 1943 and later obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1947 as a member of the Law Review. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Tom began his legal career, which spanned a total of 62 years, in Greenville before moving to Rocky Mount in 1949 where he was a partner with Dill, Fountain, Hoyle, and Pridgen and later as of counsel with Battle Winslow Law Firm. He was inducted into the NC Bar Association General Practice Hall of Fame in 2005 and served as a representative for Edgecombe County to the NC General Assembly in 1955, 1957, and 1959.

An active member of the Rocky Mount community, Tom was a committed Kiwanis member for over 50 years and served as a deacon, an elder, a teacher and a trustee for First Presbyterian Church of which he was a long-time member. He loved collecting stamps and coins, reading history, playing golf with his friends at Benvenue Country Club, and vacationing with his wife and family in Blowing Rock, NC. Smart, entertaining, and always interested in the world around him, he lived the Christian faith with honor and integrity. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, Tom will be missed.

Tom is survived by his daughters; Ann Dill Hamrick and husband, Dr. Alger V. Hamrick, III of Raleigh, Harriet D. Thorpe and husband, George W. Thorpe, of Rocky Mount, and Susan D. Lee of Tarboro; his son, Thomas G. Dill, Jr., and wife, Ann D. Dill, of Rocky Mount; his six grandchildren; Rebecca Hamrick Boone (Robert) of Winston-Salem, Ann F. Hamrick of Raleigh, Alger Vason Hamrick, IV (Grace) of Raleigh, Sarah P. Barnhill (Austin) of Raleigh, Alexander D. Lee (Erin) of Southport and Thomas G. Dill, III of Rocky Mount; ten great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Richard T. Fountain; his sister-in-law, Margaret F. Paylor; numerous nieces; and nephews. Tom was grateful for the support of his caregivers in his final years.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Tom's Life will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 2:00 PM, at First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, 153 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, 27804, with Rev. Matt Baker officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the Lacy Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Tom's name to either First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, 153 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or to the United Way Tar River Region, 2501 Sunset Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 270804.
