Tim Mclaurin Obituary

Widely revered writer and teacher Tim McLaurin died in Carteret County on Thursday, July 11, after several long and courageous battles against cancer. He was born on his family's farm near Fayetteville in 1953. A former Marine who served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisa, and later toured with a carnival snake show, McLaurin earned a journalism degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, and most recently taught creative writing to devoted students at North Carolina State University. He lived with his wife, Carol, in Hillsborough, where he remained especially devoted to his children, Megan and Christopher.
McLaurin authored seven widely praised books - four novels: The Acorn Plan, Woodrow's Trumpet, Cured By Fire, The Last Great Snake Show; two works of nonfiction: Keeper of the Moon and The River Less Run; and a book of poetry, Lola. Among his literary awards are the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for fiction and the Mayflower award for nonfiction, McLaurin's brave refusal to allow illness to dampen his spirit or diminish his steadfast love of family, friends, home, and the natural world will long inspire those who knew him.
His family includes his wife, Carol; his children, Meghan and Christopher; their mother, Katie Early; McLaurin's mother and father, Darlene McLaurin and the late Reese McLaurin; brothers, Bruce, Keith, and Danny McLaurin; sisters, Karren Jernigan and Kelly Petzel; and 10 nephews and nieces.
Arrangements for a memorial service to be held in the coming weeks are incomplete at this time.
