Virginia Lansing Obituary

Virginia M. Lansing

Chapel Hill

Virginia Maxfield Lansing, "Ginny", passed away peacefully at Carolina Meadows on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the age of 89. Ginny was born in Davenport, IA on December 13, 1929 to Robert and Leila Maxfield.

Ginny met James Brennan Lansing at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Ginny and Jim were married on May 4, 1952. They enjoyed 53 years of a happy marriage until Jim's passing on May 30, 2005. Jim and Ginny began married life in Norfolk VA while Jim completed his service in the Navy. Throughout the years, they resided in Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, and Virginia, with retirement in Chapel Hill, NC. They were some of the first residents in the villas at Carolina Meadows. Ginny was a home-maker until 1970 when she began work for the IRS. While living in Michigan, she was instrumental in forming a Girl Scout troop. Many years were spent supporting her children in various school and summer activities as well as numerous sports events. In retirement, Ginny and Jim enjoyed life at Carolina Meadows. Together they traveled and took courses through Elderhostel. They were also firm believers in giving back to their community. Ginny volunteered for a number of years with the Red Cross, coordinating and participating in blood drives.

Ginny made friends easily and enjoyed sharing in the lives of others. Ginny was raised Lutheran, and always felt at home with the liturgy of the Lutheran church. After she and Jim moved to Chapel Hill, they joined Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Her faith was important to her and sustained her during the good times and bad. Ginny was always very positive and uncomplaining, even in her last years as her health provided many challenges. Ginny loved her life at Carolina Meadows, where she had many friends and an active, engaged life. Most of all, Ginny loved being with her family, spending time with her children and grandchildren and hearing about what was going on in their lives, their plans and dreams. Some of the best family times were spent at an annual beach vacation. The entire family gathered at Isle of Palms, SC, for over 20 years to spend a week together in the sun and sand. Throughout her life, Ginny maintained strong ties to her numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles who resided in Iowa.

Ginny is survived by her brother Donald Maxfield (Dana) of Decora, IA; four children, Becky (Rob) VanLier of Earlysville, VA, Steve of Atlanta GA, Tim (Jeanne) of Cary NC, and Doug (Helen) of Rome GA; her grandchildren Amy, Zak, Nick, Katie and Lucy. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim and her beloved grandsons Brennan and Alec.

The family would like to express our profound gratitude to the nurses, social workers and staff at Carolina Meadows for the exceptional and loving care that Ginny and Jim received over the years. We got to know them, and they became like family to us. We thank them for the love, support and compassion they showed Jim and Ginny over many years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Durham Rescue Mission, the Carolina Meadows Residents Remembrance and Gift Fund, or a charity of your choice. Plans for a celebration of life are in progress.
