William Roberts Obituary

William Reynolds Roberts

March 31, 1947 - July 21,2016

Elk Creek

William "Billy" Reynolds Roberts succumbed to lung cancer on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at his home in Elk Creek, Virginia, while surrounded by family and friends.

William was born in Raleigh, NC, on March 31, 1947, to Dr. William Milner Roberts and Irene Reynolds Roberts. He leaves behind his wife, Joyce, and sons Will (Ele) of Raleigh, NC, and Drew (Laura) of Siloam, NC.

He was blessed by one grandson, William "Finn" Roberts of Raleigh, NC. He also leaves behind two sisters, Carolyn Clifton (Tom Beason) of Winston-Salem, NC; Jean Kitchin (Hodge) of Scotland Neck, NC; and Meredith Delavergne, mother of son Will of Raleigh, NC.

William graduated in 1965 from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh and then from NC State with a B.S. in Psychology. He found the Blue Ridge Mountains in the early 1970's, moved there, and never left.

In 1982 he started his own construction business, William Roberts & Company, and built many fine dream homes and other structures in the Twin County area near Galax, VA. Many of his clients remain his good friends. He retired from his business in 2013. He is well remembered for his warm smile, gracious greeting, and ball cap with a pencil behind his ear.

Hobbies that he enjoyed include reading, traveling, gardening, and doing all things relating to nature. He was a very curious man and loved to share his knowledge with others, especially children.

William was known by many as the "bird man." He was an avid birder, as well as a permitted wildlife rehabilitator who especially loved ravens and birds of prey.

William and Joyce travelled extensively in pursuit of their birding hobby. Over the years they visited domestic bird havens out West; in Edisto and Charleston, South Carolina; in Florida; at the Outer Banks; and at many stops along the Eastern Shore. They explored the wildlife in exotic locales, such as Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica, and Panama. William also enjoyed birding trips to Nebraska and Louisiana with some of his best friends, but some of the most special of birding discoveries took place in their very own backyard.

In his community he was very active, always striving to help make the world a better place. In the past he served on the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and the Twin County Regional Hospital Board of Directors, both of which fostered and furthered a keen interest in healthcare.

Recently, he served as Co-chair of the Grayson County Democratic Party and as a board member of both the Blue Ridge Discovery Center and the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts.

The family extends an invitation to a casual memorial service on Sunday, August 21, at 2 p.m. at Matthews Living History Farm Museum in Galax, VA. For directions and information please visit www.matthewsfarmmuseum.org

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to either The Blue Ridge Discovery Center (blueridgediscoverycenter.org), 1267 Wilson Hwy, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363 or The Chestnut Creek School of the Arts (chestnutcreekarts.org), 100 N. Main St., Galax, VA 24333.

I've been reading "What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Birds",
by Jennifer Ackerman, and I kept thinking oh, how William would enjoy this book. Chapter 7 goes into great detail about the Wildlife center and rehabilitation facility in Waynesboro, where I know many of "his" birds went for help. Thinking of William and his family.

Thinking of the family at this time. Billy and I went to the same church and high school. Our parents were also good friends. He will be greatly missed.

I counted Billy as a friend in high school at Broughton in Raleigh. Remember 750 Norton scrambler and going very fast. Remember going hunting and not really shooting anything but loving being outdoors. It was great seeing Billy at our reunion. The smile and the sparkle in his eyes were the same. A true free spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Artie Ingram

William was simply one of the best persons I ever knew, intelligent, warm, friendly, sharing, motivated. He had a profound influence on my life and will not be forgotten.
The day after William's passing we photographed a large Osprey in our back yard, something that has never happened in our 12 years here. I'd like to think that was William saying farewell. Thanks for the memories, William.

Very fond memories of the many times I was fortunate to spend with William. Our quest to satisfy our mutual curiosity about so many things had such an impact on our young sons, who often accompanied us on adventures. I'll never forget the day I met William, and the difference that our subsequent friendship has made in my life. He was one of a kind. Joyce, Will, and Drew, I share your sorrow, in the loss of such an amazing man.

Joyce and family,
We were so sorry to hear of William's passing. He was a great man who made others feel important and cared for and respected. Our memory from the visit with you and William and Drew at the restaurant back in March will always remain with us, even though it was brief we all thoroughly enjoyed catching up, talking about the families, and hearing how he and Susan covered the plum tree! You are in our thoughts and prayers, do not hesitate to reach out. Regards, Barb and Roger

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I grew up with Billy and Jean and we had a wonderful childhood. I loved those years and those memories. I was thrilled to see Billy once again at the reunion last August. He was one of those classmates that it was "extra special" to see and talk with. We grew up together, he was my dear friend and I cherish his memory and his adorable grin. What a delightful person! My thoughts and prayers for each of you who are dealing with the pain of his loss.
Kindly,
Patsy Campbell

"Exuberant" is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Billy, as I called him in high school. After he moved to Virginia in the 1970's, I did not see him again until last August, 2015, when we hugged at our 50th high school reunion in Raleigh. I am so thankful I got to see Billy after so many years and to meet Joyce.

Love and blessings to his family,
Donna Helen Crisp
