Carter Walters Obituary

Carter Walters passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 28,2018. He was born in Athens, GA on June 13, 1931 to Cartie Cay Walters and Allie Lee Brown Walters. At the age of 10 he moved to Minneapolis, MN with his mother and sister Joyce who was a year older than he. After High School, Carter joined the Marine Corps. Upon discharge from the Marines he returned to Minneapolis where he met and married Mary Steward. They came to California on their honeymoon and decided to stay in Los Angeles.

After a few years in L.A. and the birth of their first child Charles "Chuck", they moved to Fullerton in Orange Co. Ten years later with two more children, David and Tracey, they moved to the small town of Yorba Linda. During these years Carter was in sales and marketing in the moving industry. When Yorba Linda began to grow the family decided to relocate. The Lord led them to Santa Barbara where Carter invested in Mercury Van Lines which grew to three offices in Oxnard, Goleta, and Thousand Oaks. When his partner became ill they sold the company, and Carter worked for Allied Van Lines in Santa Barbara until he retired. It was then he discovered tour guiding and spent many happy hours showing tourists this beautiful area.

Carter will probably be most remembered for his volunteer work. From Big Brothers (3 little brothers) in Orange Co., to Optimist Club of Goleta, playing Santa Claus at various pre-schools and functions, and always in his church. After retiring he could be found Monday mornings greeting patients outside the Cancer Center with either Molly or Willie the friendly labs. He was also a hospice volunteer for Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care.

Carter is survived by his wife Mary, his children Chuck Walters (Melinda), David Walters (Torrie), and Tracey Walters (Thomas Felkay), his grandchildren Alana Balboa (Anthony), Brandon Walters (Nicole), and Cole Walters (Rebecca), and great grandchildren Carter, Reed, and Jade Walters.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful, caring nurses on the Cardiac Unit at Cottage Hospital as well as Dr. Abate, Dr. Yim, and Dr. Lash who cared for him during his last week. A memorial service for Carter will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church on June 13, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center or Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care.
