Caroline Dealy Obituary
Caroline Hedden Pentlarge Dealy Caroline Hedden Pentlarge Dealy, age 84 of Danbury and Sherman, passed away Sunday (November 23, 2008) after a struggle with cancer. Born in Montclair, N.J., July 2, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Frank R. Pentlarge and Marguerite (Allen) Pentlarge. Caroline attended St. Margaret's School in Waterbury and received her B.S. from Wellesley College. She had a keen interest in the natural sciences and before raising her family, she worked as a research assistant at the Rockefeller Institute in the laboratory of Dr. Rene Dubos and at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Staten Island, N.Y. on the team developing the important antibiotic, terramycin. One of Caroline's passions was the lore of flowers and gardening, from the tiniest wintergreen berry found along the trail to the spectacular displays of her night blooming cereus, and she was an active participant of the Sherman Garden Club and master gardener at Hausman's Nursery in New Milford. She was also very active in the Sherman Players, where she was stage manager for numerous productions, and was a longtime member of the Sherman Jam and Jelly Club. Caroline's artistic sense was evident in the stained glass pieces she created, her clever displays of memorabilia related to the 12 days of Christmas, and the beautifully unique and intricate keepsake quilts she sewed. Caroline was an adventurous spirit whose outdoor activities included hiking with her beloved Hungarian Sheepdog, Kisci, bicycling across the Netherlands and crewing a tall ship in Puget Sound. She was also an avid reader and thinker, and some of her favorite books included Silver Pennies, The Prophet, and Gift from the Sea. Most of all, Caroline was deeply devoted to her four children, Wensley A. Dealy of Torrington, Darilyn H. Dealy of Asheville, N.C., Frank P. Dealy of New Milford, and Caroline N. Dealy of Farmington; and to her three grandchildren, Miera B. Dealy, Rowena B.D. Kosher and Lavinia B.D. Kosher. Caroline was the last of the Pentlarge siblings, and she and her sisters, Georgiana Field, Marguerite Strassburger, and Barbara Jane Pent-large, will be sorely missed by the Dealy and Field families. There will be a public service at the King Street Church, 201 South King Street, Danbury, Friday, November 28 at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. burial at the Mt. Hebron Cemetery, 851 Valley Road in Montclair, N.J. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
