Mons S. Sjaastad, 84, of Danbury, husband of Sheila (Gorevin) Sjaastad died on Saturday, March 7, 2015 in Danbury.
Mr. Sjaastad was born in Brooklyn, NY, October 24, 1930, a son of the late Siverin and Gorgina (Andersen) Sjaastad. He attended New York schools and upon completion of high school joined the Merchant Marines and at the age of 20 toured most every country in the free world.
A U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Sjaastad was a former shipping and receiving clerk with Circle Steel; first at their Brooklyn, NY facility and later, Bethel, CT. In later years, he was a machinist with National Can Company in their production division.
A resident of Danbury since 1969 coming from Westchester County, NY, he enjoyed many types of crafts as well as all types of puzzles.
He was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mons served as a chaplain with the local D.A.V. and V.F.W. chapters and the annual Buddy Poppy Drive.
In addition to his wife, Sheila of fifty-four years, he is survived by a son, Michael Sjaastad; a granddaughter, Samantha Lyn Sjaastad and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sjaastad was predeceased by a brother, George and by a sister, Anna.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury with military honors.
Interment will take place at the direction of the family.
The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Saturday from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
