Richard McGoldrick Obituary

Richard J. McGoldrick
1937-2025
Our dear friend, brother-in-law, stepfather, longtime Sherman farmer and mentor, Richard J. "Dick" McGoldrick, passed away peacefully at home in Sherman on August 21, 2025. He was 88.
Dick was born on May 18, 1937, at New Milford hospital to William and Margaret McGoldrick. He attended elementary school in Sherman and graduated from New Milford High School.
Dick took over the McGoldrick family farm back in 1970. It is still in operation today. It started over 150 years ago as a tobacco farm, evolving over the years to include dairy and beef cattle, pigs, chickens, crops, and hay. The haying operation is still ongoing.
He was happiest in the field on his tractor.
Dick served his beloved town of Sherman in many ways. He was a selectman from July 1999 through July 2001 and was also on the Board of Tax Review and the Board of Assessors.
Many of the area's adults will remember Dick fondly as their bus driver, and it always brought a smile to his face when someone would stop him around town and in New Milford in later years and say, "you were my bus driver!"
He also served as sexton of the Coburn Cemetery on Leach Hollow Road.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Dick was married to Nancy Williams, and later, after Nancy's death, to Bernadette Wolfe Coyte, who also predeceased him. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, William and David.
He leaves behind his sisters-in-law Phyllis and Nancy, several stepchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. All who knew him, and experienced his kindness, generosity, salt-of-the-earth demeanor and gentle spirit, are better for it.
A mass for Dick will be held on Friday, September 19 at 11 o'clock a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Parish, 21 Brush Hill Road in New Fairfield, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered for a charity of your choice.
