Robert Campbell Obituary

Robert J. Campbell
Robert J. Campbell, "Soupy" born in Danbury, CT on June 17, 1926, passed away at the age of 98 in the VA Hospice of CT. Born to Walter and Gladys Campbell of Danbury. In 1980 he and his wife Beverly moved to New Fairfield. Bob was a happy man and made others laugh. He was very proud of his Scottish ancestry.
Bob loved sports and was a gifted athlete himself. He played basketball at St James Church and for Danbury High School playing varsity for four years. He received two medals, the first for "Good Sportsmanship," and the second for "Best all-around Athlete." He was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers. His favorite sport was horse racing. He loved watching the trotters on TV, at a racetrack, or OTB.
At age 17 Bob worked after school at Lee's Hatting factory until his sense of duty lead him to enlist for three years in the Merchant Marines. His 18th birthday was spent at Normandy Beach on the ship the John W. Hoyt. After his three years were up, he reenlisted for two years in the Air Force as a Radio Operator in Japan and with the Rescue and Cleanup Operation.
Back in the USA he married Beverly Ratchford, his loving wife of 66 years. He eventually had three children - Robert B. Campbell (Donna) Woodbury, CT - Kathy L. Campbell Denver, CO - and Scot J. Campbell (Terry Hogan) Marco Island, FL. He attended WCSU earning a degree in Math Education. Bob taught at Park Ave. school, Danbury and then he moved to teaching grade four and five at Pound Ridge School in Bedford, NY.
After retirement Bob worked odd jobs, such as painting and sales for Iovino Bros. He volunteered for "Meals on Wheels" and as Assistant director of Children's Religious Education at New Fairfield Congregational Church. Bob says he lived a "Full, and exciting life."
Preceded in death by wife Beverly, and sister Marita Campbell.
Survived by his three children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
We are grateful for all of his home caretakers, the nurses and Dr.'s who cared for him over the years.
A Memorial Service for Bob will be on Dec. 1 at 1:00 p.m. at New Fairfield Community Church, 20 Gilloti Rd., New Fairfield, CT.

Mr. Campbell was made a huge difference in my life (as a fifth grader). I am so happy he lived such a long life, he was such a kind man. The fifth grade trip to Washington D.C. was one of my favorite trips ever:)

Mr. Campbell was my fifth grade math teacher.
While I wasn´t the greatest student in the world, he took interest in me and my early love of music by playing Tom Jones records in class,
Which I loved.
Thank you Mr. Campbell for all you did for so many of us.

Mr Campbell and Mr Kraft were a duo I will never forget. I had him as a teacher in 5th grade at Pound Ridge Elementary School.

If I´m not mistaken the two of the also sold Encyclopedias in the summer time. My parents were customers I believe.

May he rest in peace knowing the positive impact he had on kids lives!

Mr. Campbell was my favorite teacher at Pound Ridge Elementary school. My parents invited him frequently for dinner at our house. I will always have fond memories of him.

I remember Mr. Campbell well as one of my elementary school teachers. When we went on the fifth-grade Washington, D.C., trip, I was sitting in the hotel's little bay window high up on one of the floors and saw Mr. Campbell, Mr. Beldon (sp?) and Mr. Finch walking across the street to the bar/restaurant. When we joked with him about it the next day, he was like, "Um, can you guys not tell anyone about that?" Ha! Mr. Campbell was a GREAT teacher. I still remember this audio unit he had where you had to listen to tapes and solve a mystery. It's funny what sticks with you.

Bob,Kathy and Scott
My sincere condolences of your loss. Oak Ridge was a wonderful place to grow up in the 60's and your dad was a great part of it. I happily remember the whiffle ball games in your yard with Bob participating. I also fondly remember him bringing me to the "trotters"on moments notice when he had a"hot one" My father always looked forward to their trips together every year to the horse racing in Saratoga. Your dad was a unique and vibrant man.

To me he was always "Mr. Campbell" as I would often be playing catch in his yard with his son, and one of my best friends, Bobby. They are among my fondest memories of growing up during the 60's. I'm an avid Yankees fan and we would often discuss baseball and the Yankees and the Tigers. The Campbell's are a wonderful family and will forever be a part of me and the memories of my life. I am very saddened by Mr. Campbell's passing and extend my deepest condolences to his family.

Dear Bob and family,

I´m so sorry for your loss.
I remember both your dad and mom having grown up in the same neighborhood. As we lose our parents we realize we have now become the "old folks." May wonderful memories of your father bring you comfort.

Condolences on the passing of your Dad, a true friend to all. You couldn't avoid a laugh when Soupy was around. I always thought that a "twinkle in your eye" was non-existent until I met Soupy. He was never without that twinkle - even if his horse didn't come in. Part of the 'Greatest Generation", he will be missed......

I'm so sorry to read this news. Barbara and I were "backdoor" neighbors for all the years we lived on Nancy Drive. We had a lot in common - both teachers, sports enthusiasts, and just great neighbors. He touched so many lives and I remember him as a sports fan at DHS, hardly missing a baseball game. Barbara and want to send out sincere condolences to the family. A great loss.
