Robert McGuire Obituary

Robert J. McGuire
1957-2025
Robert J. McGuire, a longtime resident of Newtown, Connecticut, passed away on October 19, 2025, at age 67 following a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was born October 26, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, son of Robert and Jane McGuire. Robert grew up and attended parochial schools in Harrington Park, New Jersey and graduated from Newtown High School after the family moved to Newtown in 1974. He went on to attend the University of Bridgeport and Western Connecticut State University, and subsequently worked for years at Grumman Corp. on Long Island, where in his free time he was an avid recreational runner. Upon relocating back to Newtown, Robert worked locally at the Stop & Shop, where he was a favorite of colleagues and customers and was known for his kindness and goodwill.
Robert, affectionately known to family and friends as "Boo", was a tremendous reader and student of history, in particular President Lincoln and the Civil War. Eloquent, thoughtful and loyal, he had a fantastic sense of humor and was a huge music fan, with encyclopedic knowledge of and appreciation for Bob Dylan. His interpretations of spiritual readings were insightful and stimulating. Boo was a loving and beloved son, brother, uncle and cousin, and his wit, kindness and intelligence will be missed deeply by his family and friends. He had an incredible and supportive group of dear friends in and around Newtown, where he was a mentor to many.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Jane McGuire, his brother Stephen and his sister Ellen. He is survived by his brother John and sister-in-law Nomi Vanessa McGuire, and by his loving nieces and nephew, as well as dear cousins. He is also survived by his group of dear and supportive friends who have been touched deeply by his kindness over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Washington Cemetery in Washington, CT. All are welcome.

Rest in peace, Boo!

Thank you for 50 years of treasured friendship. I am so grateful and honored for your presence in my life. Loving, kind, and generous, yet also wickedly funny, intelligent, compassionate, and a true champion for so many.

I will miss you dearly, my friend, both a gentleman and a scholar. Your kindness, laughter, and wisdom will live on in so many hearts.

With deep sympathy to John, Nomi, their three beautiful children, and all of Boo´s family and friends.

When Bob learned that I had written a book (many years ago) on the poetry of William Carlos Williams, he immediately purchased both the book and a book of Williams' poetry. Whenever I would see him, he would ask insightful questions about what he read there. He had an extraordinary open, inquisitive, and insightful mind, in addition to his kind and gentle nature. I will miss him dearly. Scott
