George Merlin Heagy Jr., 75, of Peru died Aug. 3, 2023, at Aperion Care Princeton after battling Parkinson's Disease for many years.
George was born Sept. 21, 1947, in Keokuk, Iowa, to George Merlin and Mary Jane (Boeddeker) Heagy. The family moved to La Salle in 1955. He graduated from St. Roch's Catholic School, La Salle, was a 1965 graduate of St. Bede Academy, Peru, and a 1992 graduate of Illinois Valley Community College Nursing Program as a Registered Nurse.
He was employed by La Salle Body and Fender doing auto body repair until he decided to to pursue his goal of being an RN. He was employed as a RN at the La Salle County Jail, Ottawa, and St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley, until his diagnosis with Parkinson's.
George was an avid runner. He was an original member of Starved Rock Runners LTD, serving as president 1984-88. He was proud to be honored with the 1990 Rod Steele Award for outstanding volunteer presented by Road Runners Club of America at its 1991 convention in Kansas City, MO. He loved dogs and karaoke and never turned down the mic.
George was passionate about finding a cure for Parkinson's and has donated his body to the Genesis Legacy Whole Body Donation Foundation in hopes of furthering research to help others with this disease. There will be no services.
He is survived by one daughter, Chantal Heagy of Molalla, Ore.; one step-daughter, Amanda Lutyen-McEmery (Ryan McEmery) of Ottawa; one sister, Cynthia (Dan) Rolando of Oglesby; two sisters-in-law, Patti Heagy of Peru and Joyce Heagy of Peru; two step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and one great-great niece. He also is survived by friends and caregivers, Bruce Hawkins of La Salle, Carol Vandom of Peru and Eric Heagy of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Nancy Marchiando, and two brothers, Richard "Dick" Heagy and Donald "Hagar" Heagy.

He was a nice guy. My mom was married to his brother Dick and he always reminded me what it was to get out and overcome what you can deal with when you exercise. Rest, and keep moving mountains.
