John Ruiz Sr. "Johnny", 86, of Spring Valley, died on Friday, February 27, 2026, after battling a long illness.
Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service for Johnny will begin at Noon on Wednesday, March 4, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Rev. Gregory Jarzombek, O.S.B., will officiate. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday morning, from 10:00 AM until time of services, at the funeral home.
John was born on March 13, 1939 in Spring Valley. He had worked on the railroad for 42 years before retiring early.
John enjoyed dancing, having cookouts, parties, and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed watching the DePue Boat Races every summer. John was a member of the DePue Men's Club for many years. In the mornings, you could catch him having coffee at Angie's Restaurant or John's Place. Or at the Dome to pop a top.
John is survived by his children, Jeff (Angela) Ruiz, Lisa (Jim) Harmon, John Jr. (Micki) Ruiz, Zenon (April) Ruiz, Monica Ruiz, and Linda Martin; his eight grandchildren, Matt Harmon, Crystal Ruiz, Ashley Harmon, Jimbo Harmon, Leonel Perez Jr., Nate Cotton, Tyler Ruiz, and Sara Ruiz; nine great grandchildren; and his siblings, Daniel (Janet) Ruiz, Ramona Cabral, Gina Felix, and Rita (Frank) Ojeda. John also has many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his friend, Kathleen, and her son, Ron.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Zenon Ruiz and Bertha Lopez, and his brother, Herman Ruiz.
