William "Bill" Smith (56) of Mendota–formerly of La Salle–lost his battle with cancer on August 27th at his mother's residence in LaSalle. Bill passed away surrounded by love and support in the form of his family and the love of his life. Bill was born on February 3, 1966 in Ottawa at the Ryburn Memorial Hospital to Anthony and Mary Ann (Raines) Smith. Ever since childhood, Bill cherished spending time with his family and friends. As the years progressed, Bill became known as a "jack of all trades" --mastering everything from home repairs, to automotive work, to welding, and everything in between. To Bill, these skills were yet another way he illustrated his enormous heart–always being the first to offer a hand to friends, family, and the like. For most of his life, Bill relished outdoor activities, such as chopping wood with his brother-in-law, Rick, and fishing with his late father, Tony. Bill has left many of his family and friends here, but in his passing, he has reconnected with two of his sons, Gregory and Daniel. His family imagines this reunion as a beautiful one. Bill is preceded in death by his father, Tony (2014), two sons: Gregory and Daniel Smith (2014), one brother: Anthony Smith in (2015), and paternal and maternal grandparents. He is survived by his mother: Mary Ann, one son: Ben Smith, one brother: Ed Smith, two sisters: Kim (Rick) Gott and Wanda (Tony) Bunzell, one granddaughter: Aleeha Smith, the love of his life: Karen Johnson, and several nieces and nephews. Per Bill's wishes, cremation rites have been arranged. Following cremation, there will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 3rd at First Baptist Church in La Moille, IL. An open visitation will begin at 11 am for anyone wishing to pay their respects with a formal service following at 1pm. Pastor Scott Beattie will officiate the memorial service. The Burgess Funeral Home (La Salle) is currently handling all arrangements. Family and friends of Bill Smith are welcome to attend the memorial services–in remembrance and love of William (Bill) Smith's life. Online condolences may be expressed at www.burgessfh.com
