Charles L. Smith

November 25, 1935 - April 25, 2021

Charles L. "Deacon" Smith, 85, went to his eternal Home on April 25, 2021.

Born on November 25, 1935, in Northampton, Mass., he leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Rose Marie; three sons, Charles III (Rosa), Nathan (Melody), and Thomas (Dania), ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a sister, Jeanne Willis of Tampa, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graduate of The Citadel, he had a varied career serving as an officer in the Coast Guard and administrator in the USDA and EPA. He served for ten years as Pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Retiring to the Valley, he was an active member of Wayne Hills Baptist Church. He was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed gardening, travel and sharing the good news of God's gift of eternal life.

He praises God for his salvation through Jesus Christ and is thankful for the blessing of family, church family, friends and neighbors and all who have been praying for him. He is grateful for the good care he's received from Augusta Health, AN&RC and Hospice of the Shenandoah. "ALL things work together for GOOD to those who LOVE Him and are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Dr., Fishersville, Va., from 6 until 8 p.m.

To Rosemarie and family, My family & I were very saddened to learn of Pastor Smith's being laid to rest. I was able to hear a few of his sermons because, Michele Hayes attended Temple Baptist. Michele and I were very fortunate to have Pastor to baptize both of us. She was a member of Temple, but I was not, but was a member of a Church nonetheless. We are eternally grateful to have known Pastor, and to be a witness to his serving Our Lord & Savior. May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences and sympathy to You, Sister Rosemarie and the entire family. May God Comfort each of you, I pray in the Very Blessed Name of Jesus Christ, Our Lord & Savior. Deacon Smith was one of the finest Christian men I have ever known. For so many of us he modeled grace and graciousness. His face glowed with love for the Lord. His love for his wife and children were shown in word and deed. His love for his church overflowed into giving, giving, giving of his time and resources and life. I consider him among the finest mentors I ever had, and as we served as elders together he often would encourage this discouraged pastor with his insight and well timed Latin phrases! He was 100% committed to keeping the main thing the main thing, advancing Christ's great command to love God and neighbor with everything you have and advancing Christ's great commission to love those who need Jesus and share how to meet Jesus with them, whether they live across the street or around the world. One of the great blessings of my life is knowing Charles and RoseMarie Smith.
