Steven Cason Obituary

Steven Lynn Cason

November 1, 1949 - January 28, 2025

Steven Lynn Cason, 75, of Richmond passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025. Family surrounded him with love his last days. Born in Waynesboro, VA, Steve always counted the Blue Ridge Mountains as his home even after he moved away. It is there that he and Patrice Gorman Cason met; married for over 50 years, together they built a beautiful life and family. Steve graduated from James Madison University in 1972 with a degree in Business Administration and Management. While still in school, Steve took a part-time summer job at JCPenney in Staunton, which ended up launching a 39-year career with the JCPenney Corporation. His career took him from Merchandising to Marketing in the corporate office to Store Manager at several different locations over the years until he retired in 2009.

When his career brought him back to Richmond, Steve was active in the Rotary Club of Bon Air as well as serving on the board of both the Richmond Retail Merchants and Virginia State Retail Merchants. He was later appointed Government Relations Representative and sat on the Connecticut State Retail Merchants board when he managed the Meriden, CT, store. Upon his retirement, Steve and Patrice moved back to Virginia where they were active in their community and were able to spend time with family and friends. Steve spent as much time on the golf course as possible in his retirement.

Steve's family was his greatest joy. In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by his son, Shane Michael Cason (Mary) and grandchildren, Brynn Lawrence Cason, Mary Clara Cason and James Michael Cason of Richmond; and his daughter, Amber Meredith Cason of Huntersville, NC. Steve is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Cason Davis (Craig); and nephew, Sean Gardiner (Stephanie) and his family. Steve's family will always cherish their memories and celebrate a life well-lived and well-loved.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Richmond Animal League or the Rick Sharp Alzheimer's Foundation would be a wonderful tribute to Steve and his loved ones. The family will honor Steve's life from 2 to 4, on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Affinity Funeral Home, 2720 Enterprise Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Waynesboro, VA, returning Steve to rest amongst his beloved mountains.

Pat, our deepest condolences to you and the family. There aren't enough words to describe what this dear friend meant to me. All the good times we had during high school, playing music in the Townsmen, watching him play football for Wilson Memorial, to rooming together in college. I cherish the memory of when he first met you. He knew then that you were going to be the love of his life. 50+ years together authenticates that. Successful in career and life. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend. He will be sadly missed. RIP my dear friend.

My deepest sympathy to his family. I knew Steve from playing golf at the Highlands. He was a friendly positive guy and I always enjoyed being around him. Through the years we traded stories about our grandchildren and often saw each other at youth soccer games. Very sad to hear this.

Prayers and hugs for th family. Steve and I went all through school together and l have only fond memories. He was a friend to all. I ran into him just a few years ago at a restaurant in Waynesboro with his dad who incidentally was one of my supervisor at DuPont. Was great seeing them both.
