Walter Schwab Obituary

Walter M. Schwab, 96, of Waynesboro, died Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Summit Square Retirement Community, after a brave fight with cancer.

He was born April 25, 1911, in Fauquier County, a son of the late Maurice and Lucy MacDonald Schwab.

He had been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1940, serving as an Elder, Deacon, and in other capacities. He was recently honored by the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club for 66 years of service, and had received the Kiwanis Legion of Honor and the Hixon Fellowship Award. Even in his 90's he could be found ringing the Salvation Army bell at Christmas.

He was owner and manager of Driver's Sales and Service, Dodge and Plymouth Automobile Agency from 1938 until his retirement in 1977.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth G. Schwab; his brothers, Joseph, Ashton, Seth, and Carroll Schwab; and sisters, Mabel Holmes and Elsie Payne.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Betty Schwab of Mechanicsville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Bill Jesser of Charlottesville, Sue and Mike Cale of Waynesboro, and Kay and Brad Dawson of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister, Katie Coiner of Charlottesville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Dr. Glen Holman. A private burial will be held earlier at Riverview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at McDow Funeral Home, and at the church following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club.

Arrangements are being handled by McDow Funeral Home.

Dear Barbara, Billy and family, To have known Mr. Schwab for this many years was a great joy. His quiet way and smile was always welcoming. He made me laugh about his bird house that the birds stuffed so full of sticks, no one could enjoy it. Your Dad/Grandpa could make you laugh always. I feel honored to have known him when I was a child and even into my own adulthood. Thanks for sharing your Dad with me. He will be missed.

We want to express our sincere condolences. Walter was such a wonderful, kind and caring man. When my brother, Brad, married Kay, our family was overwhelmed by Walter and Elizabeth's kindness. They were such fun to be with and each time we got to see them, it was an memorable event. We will never forget them!

Please know that your Dad's gentle heart touched many people and that your family will be in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.
