Vera Brimer Townsend Crockett, 94
CRISFIELD - Vera Brimer Townsend Crockett passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home.
Born on Smith Island July 6, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Filmore A. and Evelyn D. Evans Brimer. Her husbands, Aaron Thomas Evans, Otis Townsend, and William "Bill" Crockett preceded her in death.
While living on Smith Island she co-owned the grocery store with her late husband, Aaron Thomas Evans, and also worked at the post office. After moving to Crisfield she worked as a dietary manager at the former McCready Hospital and retired as a human resources assistant there. Following retirement, she worked as a code enforcement inspector for the City of Crisfield.
Very active in her community, she was a member of Ewell United Methodist Church while on Smith Island and currently Immanuel United Methodist Church; she was active in the UMW at both churches. She was a charter member of the Ewell Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, was a member of the former Chesapeake Chapter #28 Order of the Eastern Star and was a certified first aid instructor. The American Red Cross graduated the first members of her Smith Island First Aid Class in 1962. She also served on the Somerset County Board of Education for several years.
Vera loved to cook and eat good food. She enjoyed traveling and absolutely adored her grands and great-grands. She was also a foster parent for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Evans Marshall and husband Glenn of Crisfield; grandchildren, Thomas Bradley "Brad" Evans, Jr. and wife Natalie, Melissa Evans Cassimore, and Heather Thompson and husband Keith; great-grandchildren, Evan Cassimore, Meredith Evans, Dylan Cassimore, Daniel Ryon Thompson, and Kaiden Thompson; special friends who always went above and beyond, Charli Evans, Virginia and Wright Townsend, Laverne Johnson, Elaine Brimer, Ethel Abbott, and Lloyd Ward; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas B. Evans; a brother, Cliff Brimer; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Brimer.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home for the outstanding care they gave Vera during her stay.
Funeral services at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home were held on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 2 p.m. A viewing was one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Jim Riley officiated and interment followed at Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
