Daniel Lion Obituary
August 10, 1954 - July 24, 2025
Daniel J. "Danny" Lion, 70, of Hamden, beloved husband of Helene Dobrowski Lion, passed away on July 24, 2025, surrounded by his family at Yale New Haven Hospital. Loving father of Kaitlin (Jose) Pizzaro. Danny was born in New Haven on August 10, 1954, son of Alberta Gervasio Lion and the late Dr. Daniel J. "Doc" Lion. Brother of Richard (Della) Lion, Judy (Tony) Carbonella, Tommy (Cindy) Lion, Angela Dickson, Maria DelVecchio and John (Christine) Lion. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Brother-in-law of Diane (Gary) Orlando. Prior to his retirement, Danny was employed by the City of New Haven, working in the Finance Department. He had a passion for golf, music, playing poker and cheering for his favorite football team, The San Francisco 49ers.
Family and friends are invited to go DIRECTLY to St. Paul VI Parish at St. Rita Church, 1620 Whitney Ave., Hamden, WEDNESDAY morning, July 30, 2025, to celebrate A Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may call TUESDAY from 4pm to 8pm at the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80), East Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Special Olympics-Connecticut at www.soct.org . Sign Danny's guest book online at www.portofuneralhomes.net .

It is hard to believe that Danny is gone. I met him in the early seventies, He was a great athlete and extremely competitive, and I played a lot of bowling, golf, and tennis with him over a number of years. We regularly attended sporting events at the former New Haven Coliseum. In March 1975, he and his group of friends stayed in Ft. Lauderdale and came to my apartment near the University of Miami where we all went to dinner and later to Miami Jai Alai. In August 1978, we traveled to Pownal VT to a vacation home with Anthony Giaimo and two others to attend the Travers Stakes at the Saratoga Racetrack where Alydar defeated triple crown winner Affirmed in a classic race. I will always have good memories of Danny, his family and friends.

My friendship with Danny began when we were young boys accompanying our fathers in their Friday night bowling league. Then it was on to Cheshire Academy, and the circle of friends from the Humphry, Edwards and Orange street area including Art, Anthony, Joe, and so many others. I will always remember his sense of humor and laughter and unending delight in recapturing memories in every detail. His love of the Red Sox was known by all who knew him and was a part of every call or conversation.
I never once saw him without his great smile and eagerness to reminisce. Danny I will think of you often and find joy in reminisces of our friendship. "Tony A"
