Edward Fitzgerald Mapp
Edward F. Mapp, firstborn son of the late Charles Fitzgerald Mapp and Arline Huggins Mapp, died from natural causes on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the age of 94. Ed was born and raised in New Haven, CT, and was an active and lifetime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. For the past 57 years, Ed lived in Branford, CT, 50 of those years with his wife, Lucille, who passed away in 2015. Ed and Lucille were married for 63 years.
As a young man, Ed "Sonny" Mapp participated in and loved many sports, including soccer, football, and track. In 1945, Ed won first place in the 50-yard dash at an AAU track event held at Madison Square Garden. A graduate of James Hillhouse High School, New Haven, Ed attended The Bloomfield College and Seminary, Howard University, and is a 1986 graduate (Bachelor of Science) of New Hampshire University.
Ed retired from the Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET) in 1991 after 23 years of service. On March 26, 2010, The Community Network of AT&T, New Haven, presented Ed with an award honoring him as one of the first African-American Trailblazers of AT&T/SNET.
Ed served as a board member for the New Haven School Volunteers, the Branford Counseling Services, and the New Haven Urban League. Right up until his untimely passing, Ed was an active member of the South Central Agency on Aging, the Program on Aging Community Advisory Board for Yale-New Haven Hospital, and the Branford Lions Club. Ed is a 1999 charter member of the St. Luke's Steel Band, playing the tenor bass pan for over 20 years, and was the band's business manager.
Ed is survived by his children, Karen Mapp and Kevin Mapp; sister, Olga Mapp Stansbury; brothers, Robert Mapp and Fred Mapp. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Lucille Little Mapp.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave, New Haven, CT. Viewing will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St, New Haven, CT.
