Gladys Tiedemann Obituary

TIEDEMANN, GLADYS KAUTZ Gladys Kautz Tiedemann, of North Haven, died peacefully on June 24, 2014. She was born on September 6, 1926, to the late Charles and Margaret Kautz. She was the wife of the late Henry A. Tiedemann, Jr. She is survived by her children, Dawn Tiedemann of Hamden, CT, Henry Tiedemann (Kathy) of Southborough, MA, Carol Wood (Tom) of Hansville, WA, Jon Tiedemann (Jody) of Southborough MA, Bruce Tiedemann (Mary) of Upton, MA, and Gayle Tiedemann-Grillo (Ralph) of North Haven, CT. She is survived by nine grandchildren: Daniel, Charles, Sarah, Allyson, Katie, Gwendolyn, Jonathan, Lindsey and Jessica. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her beloved sister, Lillian Lavanway. After graduating from New Haven State Teachers College, Gladys taught in East Hartford, Hamden and New Haven school systems. She was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven, having served on Council and as Council President. After her late husband was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease, Gladys initiated the expansion of the Parkinson Enlightment Program (PEP) support group of Greater New Haven. She traveled around the state to assist in establishing support groups throughout Connecticut. She sought affiliation with the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) and became the first volunteer President of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association which she held for 29 years, overseeing Chapter and support group activities, as well as holding caregiver support group sessions, community and education programs, offered continual telephone client reassurance, and chaired numerous fundraising events including annual walk-a-thons. She was involved with establishing the Information and Referral Center in New Haven at Saint Raphael’s Hospital. Gladys was instrumental in establishing Parkinson Fitness programs, and Lifeline and respite care subsidies. She also held the volunteer positions of APDA Northeast Regional Representative and National Board Member. In 1997, she won the APDA Salvatore & Elena Esposito Award when she was honored as National Volunteer of the Year. She also volunteered at St. Raphael’s in the Pastoral Care Department. While caring for her children, she was the first woman to be recognized as Woman of the Year by the Hamden/North Haven Womens Club. She was a strong and supportive mother, aunt, and grandmother to her family. The family would like to express their appreciation to Mrs. Donna Diaz for her friendship, care and love for Gladys over many years of working together to “ease the burden and find the cure” for Parkinsons. The family wishes to thank the nurses and aides at Hamden Health Care for their special attention and care for Gladys during her stay. Calling hours are Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 8:30 - 10:00 am at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. A Service of Remembrance will follow at 10:00 am in the funeral home. The skies are brighter tonight because there is a new star in heaven, and the earth is a bit dimmer, but better for your loving visit. Rest in peace, dear Gladys.

Dear Dawn, Henry, Carol, Jon, Bruce & Gayle,

I am so sorry for your loss. Alongside Donna Diaz, I had the distinct honor, pleasure and benefit of knowing your Mom and working with her at numerous APDA events. Your Mom was a wonderful woman and her spirit and goodness shall remain with you always. It is time to truly celebrate her life and from this day forward, the stars will forever shine brighter!

I hope that countless memories of love & laughter will carry you through this very difficult time. I also hope that this poem will offer some comfort.

Sincerely,
Greg

You Just Need To Look
By Greg O'Brien

When a loved one has left us, it's not really goodbye
because, they've left us with an abundance of
memories and love that will only grow stronger in time
They will be by your side, holding your hand
and smiling as you walk along
Throughout each day, they will help you find
the strength and the courage you need to move on
They will not want you to be sad for what you don't have
but instead, to be happy and thankful for all you had
When a loved one has left us, it's not really goodbye
because, in every sunbeam, moon glow,
raindrop and rainbow, you will find them
You just need to look

Dear Family of Gladys,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Gladys. I had the honor of working with her at numerous APDA events as well as serving with her as a Chapter President in Massachusetts. Gladys was generous as she gave time to others, understanding, because she knew their lives might be very different from her own;empathic with caregivers as her ability to put herself in someone else's shoes and feel what they must feel; compassion, to truly care about making a Parkinson's patient life better; Patience, because she knew the process doesn't always go as smoothly as it might...and had her thoughts how we should do it!! Dedication, to her family, friends, the Parkinson's Community and the APDA. We all can learn from her example as she will be truly missed. Her example and spirit in how she lived her life can continue forward as we support and help the Parkinson's community. Gladys, Thank you for all that you did!

Fondly,
Keith

Dear Jon and all the Tiedemann Family,
Your Mom was truly a most amazing and interesting lady and it was privilege to have known her the relatively short time I did. Her passion for life, family and friends included all humanity evidenced by those whose lives she was able to touch through her love, devotion and Christian fellowship. God Bless.
My deepest sympathies,
Ed

Gayle, Ralph, Gwen, Lyndsey,

After the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we've shared with our loved ones who have passed, this is what keeps them alive in our hearts and in our minds, and they will continue to live on, through us.

We are so sorry for you loss! You and the rest of your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Glady's has been in our lives for almost 60 years. Trinity Lutheran Church & then as neighbor's in North Haven. Gladys died not knowing my Husband Bruno died this year in April and he too had Parkinson's like both Hank & Herb. And Gail you'll remember being our newspaper delivery gal and going to High School with Bruce. Life is much too short, as we all know. But please cherish the happy memories of your Mom. Gladys, I will always remember you for your passion, generosity and kindness especially those who are living with and survived by Parkinson's Disease. Your commitment in supporting the community is magnanimous. May you be met with such magnanimity for your heart and soul as you leave earth. May you be at peace knowing how you've touched and helped so many.

June 25, 2014

Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received - only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.
--St. Francis of Assisi

Dear Tiedemann Family,
It was a privilege to work with Gladys for many years. Her dedication and support to the Parkinson Community inspired me and hundreds of others in New England and beyond. She was always a teacher, always a friend, always telling Donna and I we worked too hard, and most importantly always committed to raising awareness of how Parkinson's impacts both the person and family. Please accept my sympathy during this very difficult time.
