Herbert Newman Obituary

Herbert S. Newman
Herbert S. Newman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on August 7, 2023, at the age of 89. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Edna; and is survived by his sons Matthew (Jill Maloney) and Peter (Michelle Ariola-Newman) his grandchildren Meredith, Rebecca (Bradford Gleim), Louise, Silas, Nathaniel and Brett and his great-grandson, Gabriel Gleim. The last five years of his life were shared with his companion, Marsha Schiff, and her family.
Born in 1934 in New York City, where he spent his early childhood, Herb moved to Waterbury, CT, as a teenager. After graduating from Brown University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization, he received a Master of Architecture from Yale University.
Herb began his career as an architectural designer with I.M. Pei and Partners in New York. He established his own practice in New Haven in 1964, and he taught architectural design at Yale University from 1964 to 2017. In 1967, he collaborated with Dean Charles Moore and Kent Bloomer in the establishment of the Yale Building Project (now the Vlock Building Project); as part of the faculty, he coordinated and directed this project for fifty years.
Honored in 1981 for his contributions to the profession by being named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Herb also served as State Commissioner of Design for the Connecticut Society of Architecture. In 1995, he received the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture, a lifetime achievement award bestowed by the American Institute of Architects, honoring his career and contributions to the planning and design of public spaces.
His love of architecture was surpassed only by his love for his family. He cherished the times spent with his children and grandchildren, whether at home or abroad. He enjoyed traveling and teaching his family about the art and architecture of each new place. He loved tennis, Sally's Pizza, bone fishing, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and all types of irreverent humor.
He nurtured generations of students with his encouragement and generosity of spirit. His commitment to his community will live on through his numerous contributions to the architectural landscape of New Haven, and in the memories of those who loved him.
A Celebration of Herb's Life will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 at the Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven. The family will start receiving friends from 11:15 until time of service. Interment is Private. Memorial contributions may be sent to, Connecticut Architecture Foundation, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, or the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. As the first Democrat ever elected First Selectman (or woman) in Woodbridge, Ct , I could have never done it without Herb. Herb helped me get elected. But once in office, Herb´s help, along with that of Nancy (Susannah) Scully, as Co-Chair of Woodbridge´s Publicly Owned Properties Commission, was invaluable. Herb was ALWAYS calm, thoughtful, wise, creative, selfless & an incredibly gentle & strong collaborator. And who could every forget the sight of Herb in that swashbuckling, ubiquitous Jay Peterman floor-length trench coat? :-). Thank you Herb, for everything! Your deeds, & the skillful, endearing ways you accomplished them, will live on. Nan Birdwhistell
