Jean Emmons

EMMONS, JEAN ELOISE Jean E. Emmons, 93, of New Haven passed away in the early morning of November 11, 2013 at Branford Hills Health Care Center where she resided for the past six years. Jean was born in Portland, Maine on February 14, 1920 to William and Amy (Butterfield) Emmons. She was a graduate of Deering High School in Portland and attended Middlebury College in VT where she majored in Biology with a minor in French. She relocated to Middletown, CT to work for a short period at Wesleyan University and then to New Haven, CT to work at Yale University. There she served as a Research Associate at the Yale Medical School for 45 years and worked with the late Professor Dorothy Horstmann in the research to develop Rubella vaccine in the ‘50s, and Flu vaccine in the ‘60s. Jean’s outside interests included playing violin and piano, graphoanalysis, classical music, birds, gardening, and a love for India and Indian food. She was committed to her family and friends, and devoted to the Episcopal faith. A graduate of the Shalem Institute for spiritual formation, she served as a Spiritual Director. She was a member of the New Haven Episcopal Church of St. Paul & St. James for many years. Jean is predeceased by her brother Donald and survived by two nieces, Nancy Emmons and Janet Emmons of Salem, MA, and two nephews, Douglas Emmons of Pittsboro, NC and Kenneth Emmons of Biddeford, ME. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 21st 4:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul & St. James, Olive Street, New Haven. A burial service will be held at Brooklawn Memorial Park on Congress St. in Portland, ME on November 22 at 1pm. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 493 Whitney Ave., New Haven.
