I worked alongside Jeremy in the Kolega lab for the latter half of my undergraduate career, and of all of the things that I remember as I look back on my time there, my fondest memories are of afternoons spent talking sports with him. No matter how busy he was, Jeremy was always happy to lend a hand. He brightened the mood of everyone around him with his smile and wonderful sense of humor. I will always remember Jeremy and the happiness that accompanied him.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Jeremy's unexpected passing. Jeremy and I started the PhD program together in Buffalo back in 2006 and we shared the same advisor, although I worked in a different lab. Whenever research got too serious I would stop in and see Jeremy because as you know he could always make you laugh. Although I never got the chance to tell him, I am indebted to him for helping me our first year of classes. Classes were really difficult for me but Jeremy would meet me at school and study with me- he is probably the only reason I passed my first semester. I will never forgot the day I defended for my PhD, Jeremy waited for an hour outside of the room just to high-five me and say congratulations. It breaks my heart to know that I won't be able to return that high-five. He worked so hard and truly deserves the name Dr. Hayes. He was a great man and friend and he will be missed terribly. Please forgive me for not attending Jeremy's services but I was out of the country when he passed and was laid to rest. I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to the Hayes family and friends.

We've only known Jeremy for a few months. He needed a place to live while he completed his education at the University of Buffalo, so we rented him a room in our home. All that we really knew about him at the time was that he was a very educated and motivated individual continuing his education at UB to achieve his doctorate degree. But what we learned about him in those few months impressed us even more. Faced with adversities throughout his life, Jeremy was the type of person who could not just only conquer hurdles, but also accomplish success by any means humanly possible. The world will not be the same without his intelligence, humor, integrity and inclination. Reflect upon the life that he led and you'll discover the self management ability that even the brightest scholars would be jealous of. We'll miss you buddy. From the heart: Denise and Michael from Buffalo, NY.

To Jeremy's family and friends: May the memories that were created through Jeremy's life stay near to your heart always. For if you keep those memories fresh in your mind....he will never truly be gone. Jeremy was a wonderful man who made all laugh that he encountered. His very personable character drew others to him. Even though I only knew Jeremy for a short duration, around a year, the impressions he left on my life will be everlasting. May God rest his soul, and may comfort be granted to you that believe in everlasting life...

To J: As Calvin and Hobbes would have said...“A day can really slip by when you're deliberately avoiding what you're supposed to do.”
? Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes: There's Treasure Everywhere
I will miss our french toast mornings, our late night dinners, but most of all I will miss your kindness, the way you made me laugh at nothing, and your Cheshire cat smile...
I hope where you are you are playing football, and you are at peace.
GO BILLS!!!
Miss you....

I was Jeremy's Ph.D. advisor in Buffalo. Jeremy was a bright student who loved science, and he was also a very gentle and good-humored man, much liked by his colleagues at work. We are stunned and saddened by his sudden passing.
Jeremy worked on some very challenging experiments that were finally coming together after a long effort. He was very excited about his latest results and the prospect of his first scientific publications, and it is sad that he will not see the final fruits of his labor. But his work will be published and his name will become part of the scientific literature. I think he would be glad to know that.
