Joan Grace Alfiero
Joan Grace Alfiero, 60, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2021, after a valiant battle with ALS.
She was the beloved wife of David Eilbott; mother of Jeffrey Eilbott (Violet Wanta), Alyssa Eilbott, and Cara Eilbott; sister of Sue Alfiero-Bavasso (Rich Bavasso), Rob Alfiero (Nancy Hemphill), and Tom (Pina) Alfiero; and aunt to 12 nieces and nephews.
She was born in Westerly, RI, on August 5, 1960, the daughter of Mary D. and Joseph T. Alfiero.
She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island, and the Physician Associate Program at Yale University. Early in her career as a PA, she cared for HIV positive patients at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, and subsequently decided to change specialties to become a pediatric asthma and allergy specialist working with Dr. Gary Wanerka at Branford Pediatrics and Allergy.
Joan was adored by her family, friends, neighbors, and patients. She was a wonderfully empathetic listener who gave heartfelt advice and provided a needed shoulder for people to lean on in times of need.
We wish to thank all those who supported Joan and our family during these difficult past two years. We particularly wish to thank her internist Dr. Denis Miller at Branford Internal Medicine, her neurologist Dr. Merit Cudkowicz at Mass General Hospital, and Dr. Donna Criscenzo at VNA Community Healthcare and Hospice.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan's honor may be made to the ALS Association ( Share a memory and sign Joan's guest book online at Funeral arrangements are in care of the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc.

Joan set a standard for outstanding, compassionate care for people with HIV infection during the early years of the epidemic at Stony Brook University Hospital. She displayed deep concern for their welfare and did all that could be done to help them At Stony Brook she met David who was an outstanding fellow in infectious diseases. While her struggles with her health are indeed sad to contemplate her endeavors as a health care professional , mother, wife and much else should be an inspiration for all to emulate.
