Lea Shedd Obituary

Lea Sandra Nordlicht Shedd
Lea Sandra Nordlicht Shedd, 70, of Hamden, passed away peacefully at home on January 19, 2022. She was born in Long Beach, NY, in October 1951, to the late Harold and Sylvia (Wallach) Nordlicht. Lea shared 46 years of marriage with her husband Duane and is survived by her son Ian (Stephanie), her stepson Chris (Melanie), her grandchildren Juliana and Demitri, her brother Ira (Helen) Nordlicht, nephew Donny Nordlicht, and niece Jenny Nordlicht, as well as by her sister-in law Tracey Maher (James), brother-in-law Gerald Shedd, niece and nephew Kelly and Bryan Maher, and her grandnephew Michael Maher.
Lea graduated from New York University, cum laude, and earned a law degree at the University of Connecticut School of Law. She served as Chair of the Legal Studies Department at then Quinnipiac College from 1980 to 1986, then entered private practice to focus on elder law. Lea was elected Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association's Elder Law Section in 1992, serving to 1994. In 1996 she partnered with longtime friend Judith Hoberman to form Shedd and Hoberman, a law firm emphasizing elder law. Lea retired in 2015.
In 2016 Lea received a Professional Excellence Award from the Connecticut Law Tribune for her distinguished career, dedication to her clients, and commitment to pro bono work. Last year she received the first Lifetime Achievement and Career Service Award from the Elder Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.
Lea was a pioneer in the practice of elder law, setting an example for and mentoring many newcomers to the field. She also worked to improve the practice of elder law through important contributions to legislative efforts and educational programs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of Southern New England or the American Civil Liberties Union. Mask-wearing family and friends are invited to a graveside service at the Whitneyville Cemetery, 1200 Whitney Ave., Hamden, on Monday, January 24, at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements in care of Robert E. Duane, I was stunned and deeply saddened to learn of Lee's passing. I was just thinking about her the other day - how we spent the days of the bar exam at your sister's home and went to a Woodly Allen movie the night before to ease the tension. She was a remarkable woman, one I always admired.

To the Shedd family, Lea helped my family in many ways going back with my fathers affairs working out of her house in Hamden and ending with my mother, better known to Lea as George. I thought of Lea as a true friend, I´m known as sharing my Irish bread every year with her and her office. My thoughts and prayers are with you, she will be truly missed.

From Alice Klein and Barry Park-Longtime friends

Lea Nordlicht Shedd was an amazing woman. She was one of the most positive people that I have ever met. Alice was a good friend to her for 40 years and I also considered her and Dwayne my friends. I can still hear her laughter in my head. Her motto was only laughing and no crying when we visited.

Lea was like a thief. She stole time for herself, where other people in her situation wouldn´t had that time. She came to Ian and Stephanies Wedding. It was the most joyous occasion that I had ever been to. I did not ever know what to expect. She danced, she sang, and she laughed. It was almost like medicine for her.

She was visited several times by Ian, Stephanie and Juliana. She was visited by her many friends and family members in her back yard veranda. She traveled to many places with her family. She did not let her illness slow her down.

Many people were touched by Lea.

She will be loved and remembered forever.

Our sincere sympathy to you and your family. I was in lea´s class in quinnipiac when she was ready to deliver Ian and trying to get us to hurry and finish our final exam so she could go to the hospital. We couldn´t have had a better professor and later I couldn´t have had a better mentor and friend. Lea was the kindest and smartest and always had a smile. I´m 76, and every now and then when telling a good story or telling about a good person who did so much, Lea´s name comes up, even my 50 year old children remember meeting her.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Lea handled legal matters for my 100+ year old grandmother. Lea was a very compassionate and knowledgable lawyer who was always available when advice was needed. She was a credit to her profession.
Sincere condolences to her family.

Duane, Chris, and Ian and family of Lea. We had known Lea ever since you guys were dating at UConn meeting you both at your parents house in East Haven. You both were always so happy and fun to be with.
Lea always had a smile and willing to help anyone with a problem either a family member needing law advice or paperwork or someone she didn´t know. She never said no.
She is peaceful now and had fought a long battle without complaint. A truly wonderful person.
She will be greatly missed.
