Leonard (Lee) B. Franzman
June 20, 2021
After a courageous ten-year battle with breast cancer, Leonard (Lee) B. Franzman passed away peacefully on June 20, 2021.
Lee was enthusiastic about improving the lives of young people through education and sports. He spent 40 years as a middle school math and science teacher in the Meriden and Milford, Connecticut Public Schools as well as over two decades as the head girls' basketball coach at Milford High School, Foran High School, Jonathan Law High School and Amity Regional High School. Lee created a strong bond with his students and players and considered them part of his extended family.
With a passion for sports, especially basketball, Lee co-founded the Eastern Basketball Camp, an overnight camp in Moodus, Connecticut, which taught both girls and boys of all skill levels basketball fundamentals from seasoned coaches and NBA stars.
After retiring from teaching and coaching, Lee worked at the Connecticut State Office of Early Education in the Youth Camps Division.
Lee was also a member of the New Haven Tap-Off Club and the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Lee is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Karla, daughter Meryl, son Marc (Sherri), his three granddaughters, Samantha, Olivia and Ella, who were the light of his life, and his brother Laurence.
He was preceded in death by his mother (Sarah) and father (Meyer Michael).
Donations in Lee's memory may be sent to the Jonathan Law High School Sports Booster Club at Jonathan Law High School, 20 Lansdale Avenue, Milford, Connecticut 06460.
Lee's family sends special thanks to Dr. Mark Robson of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for his excellent care.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at King David Memorial Gardens in New York. At the family's request, the Shiva is private.

I'm very sorry to hear of Lee's passing. I knew Lee from our days at Camp Rising Sun. As a fledgling teacher sharing the experience of camp for kids with cancer, Lee was not only a good friend, but a role model. During our short time together, Lee was magnetic with all of the staff and kids, some of whom were very sick and battling illness beyond explanation. His demeanor, gentleness, wit, and constant support made a memorable experience for me even more memorable. I carry those memories to this day whenever I attend a Camp Rising Sun event or go through some old pictures. He was truly a gift to all of us who knew him.

My sincere condolences to the Franzman Family. I meet Mr. Franzman at Easter Basketball Camp in 1971 as a player. Mr Franzman helped a young kid that did not have self confidence become an All State Basketball player, College player, High School Coach, and Teacher the last 42 years. You helped to change my life, Thank you Mr. Franzman. I will never forget how you had your wife drive me to Boston MA to see my eye Doctor in the middle of the summer basketball camp, you and your family always did more than they had to. You were a great role model to many players and students.

I can't measure the impact that Mr. Franzman has had on my life. From Eastern Basketball Camp to Milford High to my playing days at Yale, he was with me on my entire basketball journey. New Haven Tap Off Club, CT Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, both institutions where he left his mark. I will be forever grateful for his guidance and support. Mr. Franzman was one of my favorite teachers at Orchard Hills. He took the time to get to know each and every one of his students and really connect with them. I enjoyed reconnecting with him again later in life while watching little league softball games. Condolences to the entire Franzman family. May the many wonderful memories bring you comfort during this difficult time.

I worked with Lee as a member of the Time It Right organization. Lee was wonderful to work with. As he kept score for the basketball games he made all of us at the table better. Lee was a gentleman and always took the time to introduce us to the many people he spoke with and told stories about to us. He always left us feeling better about the world around us. He will be missed. Everywhere we went there was always a former student or colleague who would know Lee.

Mr. Franzman was my teacher at Orchard Hills and also the basketball coach. I was very lucky to be his student and to play for him. He used to take me to high school basketball games, he seemed to know everyone no matter where we went. He always had that same calm demeanor, no what the situation. He is one of the people who had a big influence on my life when I was young. Later in life he said I could call him Lee, life well lived Mr. Franzman!

It was a joy knowing Lee as a long time team member of the Youth Camp Licensing Program. Lee taught many of us the critical things to look for to assure the camps were safe for children. I can think of no greater legacy than to have improved the lives of children. Lee was a shining light in this world. We were all so lucky to have known Lee.
