LOUIS KUSLAN Obituary

KUSLAN, LOUIS I. Louis I. Kuslan of Wallingford, 93, died on October 9, 2015, son of the late Joseph and Rebecca Kuslan. His first wife and first love, Dorothy, predeceased him in 1989 and they had two children together. At his death, he was the beloved husband of Barbara and father of James Kuslan, his wife Santa, Richard Kuslan, his wife Pi-Huei, and grandfather of Samuel Kuslan. He was the dear brother of Trudy Lampert and the late Maxine Trantales, uncle of Kim Lampert, Tammy Trantales, and the late Karen Czajkowski. He is also mourned by step-children Gene and Linda Belanger, David and Victoria (Hattersley) Amato, Donald and Sandy Amato, and their families. He earned a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Connecticut as well as a Ph.D. from Yale University and then was appointed Instructor of Science at New Haven State Teachers College, which became Southern Connecticut State University. He was later named Professor of Science and Chairman of the Science Department and then appointed to the position of Dean of Arts and Sciences, serving for 12 years before returning to teaching. He was recalled to administrative duty for one year as Acting Vice-President of Faculty Affairs and ultimately retired in 1987. Over those years, he published numerous research papers on the history of science education and on the early development of science instruction at Yale University plus several books on the teaching of science. In 2008, he was given an award by the Connecticut Science Teachers Association for helping to organize and structure the Association, and for his lifelong dedication and commitment to all science teachers and for teaching so many to enjoy science. A memorial service will be held at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home on Friday, October 16th at 10:00 a.m., with burial following in Mishkan Israel Cemetery. A second memorial service will be held at a later date at Ashlar Village in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven or to the Masonic Charity Foundation.

I remember him as a very nice man, also from my early career starting at SCSU. May he rest in peace, and I hope the family finds some comfort in their fond memories.

To Rich and Family,

My love and heartfelt prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Your father was a highly accomplished man who must have been very proud of all of his children and of his beloved Sam. He will be surely missed.

God bless you!

Lou was a really nice guy. I worked in the Academic Affairs office when I first started at SCSU in 1970, and Lou was Dean of Arts and Sciences, having his office in the same suite. I will always remember him and the Academic VP, Evann Middlebrooks, occasionally cutting up at the end of the day.....tap dancing in the office, with twinkles in their eyes and grins on their faces. Those were the days.
