Lucille Alderman Obituary

Lucille Alderman
Lucille Alderman passed away on January 11, 2024, in the waning hours of her 100th year. Born Lucille May Wolfe on January 12, 1924, in Bridgeport Connecticut to Esther and Morris Wolfe, Lucille married Arnold Alderman on November 23, 1944.
While her children were young, Lucille was active in community service, assisting in organizing March of Dimes fundraising in the 1950s. She also volunteered regularly in the 60 Plus Club in the New Haven Jewish Community Center and with young boys in the Cub Scouts. As her children began to leave for college, Lucille enrolled in Southern Connecticut State College, graduating with a teaching degree and taught English and Math at Hebrew Day School until withdrawing to care for her ailing mother in 1970.
She would consider tzedakah as her favorite activity, but second to that was her love of travel. She and Arnold made numerous trips to Asia and Africa as well as within the Americas. She imparted her love of travel to her grandchildren, taking them on exotic trips as they approached their teenage years.
Her particular charitable interests included assisting with the foundation of the Model Aspergers' Program in the Ivymount School in Rockville, Maryland. She supported the Community Soup Kitchen (CSK) and founded the Isaiah Fund at CSK. Along with Arnold she supported renovation of the Native American Exhibits in the Peabody Museum in New Haven and donated part of her extensive collection of African Art to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington. She also provided support to research at the Yale-New Haven Hospital on spherocytosis anemia and other blood anomalies.
She is survived by her four children, Sydney Perry, Susan Buxbaum (Barry), Harold Alderman (Claudia), and Laury Walker (Edward). She also is missed by her 15 grandchildren and her 32 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were private. Friends will join the family to sit shiva at 28 Vista Terrace Sunday 2-4 and 7-9, Monday 1-4 and 7-9, Tuesday 9:30-12 at the Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Rd., Hamden. Shiva will be 12 Barnett St., in New Haven on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5-8.
Contributions may be made in her memory at the Isaiah Fund at CSK, the Community Foundation, Peabody Museum or the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements in care of Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home. www.shurefuneralhome.com
