Martinha Goncalves, 46, of West Haven, passed away peacefully at CT Hospice on October 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She faced her illness with remarkable strength and unwavering faith.
Born in Agrela De Ervedo, Portugal, on November 11, 1978, Martinha was the beloved daughter of the late Candido Goncalves and of Piedade Goncalves. She was a proud 1997 graduate of West Haven High School.
Martinha was the beloved wife of Christopher Cuomo and cherished daughter-in-law of Sandy and Steve Dunnigan, Richard (Sr.), and Gayle Cuomo. She is survived by her sister Anabela Sharp (Herb), her brothers Rui Goncalves (Emily) and Belmiro Goncalves, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she loved dearly.
A dedicated healthcare professional, Martinha worked at several facilities throughout her career, most recently at Yale New Haven Hospital, until her illness.
Martinha took great joy in life's simple pleasures, including gardening, walking along the Milford shoreline, savoring her morning coffee, and spending time with her family. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and she will always be remembered for her gentle spirit, her gratitude for life's everyday blessings, and her radiant, contagious smile that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She leaves us with a beautiful legacy of faith, one that will continue to live on in every life she touched.
Her family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the North Haven 4th Floor Smilow Team, the staff of EP6-7 at Yale New Haven Hospital, and the compassionate caregivers at CT Hospice in Branford.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Martinha's life on Thursday, December 4, 2025, 10 a.m. at Cornerstone Christian Center, 349 Wheelers Farms Road, Milford, CT.
