Morris Bishop Obituary

BISHOP, MORRIS NORVELL Morris Norvell Bishop, born in Rich Square, North Carolina, July 6, 1923, passed away at his home in Milford, Connecticut, on Saturday May 17, 2014, at age 90. “Bishop,” as he was known to his family and friends, is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Rosemary E. Scipio Bishop. Bishop, along with his wife and family, resided in Milford, CT since 1950. Bishop served in the the 92nd Infantry from 1943 to 1945 and was awarded a Bronze Star in 2009, recognizing his combat service in the Arno River Campaign in Italy. He attended South Carolina State University, Wilberforce College, and Howard University, obtaining his B.A. Later he earned his Masters of Guidance and Sixth Year degrees from the University of Bridgeport in 1962. Bishop then began his teaching career at Point Beach School, Milford, CT, and retired after 30 years in the Milford school system as Director of Guidance. In 1967 Bishop founded Milford Septic Services which he owned and operated for 34 years. He continued to be active daily in the business until his 80s. Greatly enjoying the world of travel, he and his wife Rose visited China, Italy, Spain, Japan, Morocco, and Hawaii, among many trips throughout the U.S. and abroad. Morris was a member of the Milford Kiwanis Club and the Connecticut Chapter of The Guardsmen, as well as St. Mark’s Church in Bridgeport, CT, where he served on its vestry. Bishop is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Donald Walker of Charlestown, West VA; Susan Whetstone of New Haven, CT; Barbara and husband Lemuel Sherman of Raleigh, NC; Patti D. Bishop of Fairfax, VA; Robert Morris and wife Susan Bishop of Irvine, CA; and Betsy Miller of Stone Mountain, GA. Also, his grandchildren Cameron Whetstone and husband Josh Harris of Brooklyn, NY; Matthew Sherman of Brooklyn, NY; Donald and Devon Walker of Charlestown, West VA; Courtney Lavine of NY, NY; Trevor Lavine of Fairfax, VA; Dante Bishop and Aric Miller of Atlanta GA; Robert M. Bishop Jr. and Danica Bishop of Irvine, California; and many loving friends, neighbors, and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, John Sam and Lillian Morris Bishop, and brothers John Vernard Bishop of Silver Springs, Maryland and Wadsworth Lowell Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 71 River St., Milford, CT on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Kidney Foundation. The Bishop family appreciates the many expressions of Love & Kindness during this time of sadness.
