KAPLAN, DR. PHILLIP S. Dr. Phillip S. Kaplan, 85, of Orange, CT, devoted husband of 58 years to Vivian (Press) Kaplan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. Dr. Kaplan was born in Brooklyn, NY, Sept. 30, 1930. He was a son of the late Charles & Belle (Solomon) Kaplan. Beloved father of Paul (Angela) Kaplan of North Haven & Elise Cudgma Kaplan of Orange. Dear brother of the late Atty. Morton Kaplan. Cherished grandfather of Daniel (Amanda) Nugent, Richard Kaplan, Adam (Nicole) Cudgma, John (Kristina) Cudgma, & Jacob Cudgma. Treasured great-grandfather of Dylan Cudgma and Vivienne & Scarlett Nugent. Dr. Kaplan proudly served his country in the U.S. Army before embarking on a career in education. He then received his B.A. from the University of Mass. His M.A. in Economics from Columbia University and his Ph.D in Economics from The John Hopkins University. His administrative experience in higher education consisted of the following positions: Provost, Dean of a School of Business, Dean of a Graduate School and Chairman of a Department of Economics. He then went on to lead the University of New Haven as its President from 1973 to 1991. The things that gave him the most joy in life, besides his family, were his love of books and his love of travel, which took him and his wife all over the world. He will be greatly missed by his family, and all who knew him. Funeral services at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven, on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. The family will begin to receive relatives and friends at the funeral home starting at 10:00 a.m. Interment services to follow at the B’nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven. Following the burial, friends are welcome at 214 Deerfield Lane, (Fieldstone Village) Orange. Memorial Contributions may be sent to the Dr. Phillip S. I knew Phil for all 18 years of his service at The University of New Haven. I served as his University Registrar and was delighted to have him as a mentor and friend. I remember his love for books and travel. He was a scholar and certainly a gentleman. UNH was so fortunate to have him as a leader with visions of a strong and progressive university.
