Raymond Patrick Mahon, 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 6, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Raymond was born on October 18, 1929, in New Haven, Connecticut to Thomas and Mary (Farren) Mahon. He was predeceased by his dearly loved wife Mary Daly Mahon.
Raymond is survived by his six children, 16 grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters: son Christopher and his wife Krissa Van Hoorebeke of Holmdel, New Jersey, and their children Kevin (Amanda), Kaitlin, and Kieran; daughter Rosemary and her husband Alberto Acevedo of Shelton, Connecticut and their children Katherine, Lucas, and Max; son Andrew Farren of Arlington, Massachusetts and his children John Farren (Bekah), Lance (Kathryn) and their daughter Andromeda, Veronica (Meena) and Grace; daughter Katherine Holmes of East Machias, Maine and her children Alex, Mary Clare Farren, and Britnie and her daughter Chloe; son John Patrick of Nassau Bay, Texas and his children Patrick (Annie), Kyle, Emily, and John Raymond; and son Raymond of Guilford, Connecticut; his twin brother Walter and his wife Mary of North Haven, brother Jerome and sister Elizabeth both of Port St. Lucie Florida, sisters-in-law Lucille of North Branford and Nancy of Orange.
He was also predeceased by his granddaughter Megan, son-in-law Malcolm Holmes, his brothers William, Thomas, Edward, John, Robert, and Donald, and his sister Helen Hughes.
Ray served as a corporal in the army during the Korean conflict. He was introduced to the world beyond New Haven during his training in Georgia and Oklahoma and helped ensure Boston was safe from attack throughout the war.
Ray graduated in 1958 from the University of Bridgeport with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He accepted a position with the Pall Corporation in Glen Cove, New York where, among other things, he had a role working on filters for the Apollo 11 lunar module. The company soon recruited him to his true calling in sales where he combined his gifts for understanding engineering and connecting with people. Recognized once as Best Salesperson for the many new and lasting business relationships he had fostered, a fellow rep congratulated him, saying, "It's nice to see that nice guys sometimes finish first."
Ray and his wife Mary raised their family in Huntington, New York, where they established great friendships through St Patrick's Parish, the Marriage Encounter ministry, service projects with the Lions Club, and coaching countless little league baseball games. Ray endured as a partisan Yankee fan, growing up in a home made up predominantly of Red Sox followers. Ray made room in his heart on behalf of the burgeoning baseball fans in his Huntington household, to cheer on the newly formed New York Mets.
In 1979, Raymond and Mary moved their family to Madison, Connecticut which they called home for 38 years. Close by once again to their beloved families of origin. Ray was delighted to land among the Lions Club of Madison and forged a deep spiritual friendship with his "Breakfast Club" brothers at the Mercy Center.
While Ray liked golf, he loved golfing with his brothers weekly at Sleeping Giant and annually at the Mahon Golf Tournament. He was always assigned a good foursome, courtesy of his son-in-law and event-manager Alberto. Ray was a faithful attendee of the annual Wright-Leonard-Farren-Mahon family picnic all the way back to its start in the 1930's.
After the passing of his wife Mary in September 2021, Ray touched all the bases, spending time with siblings and long-time and long-ago friends, including a Father's Day Mets game just three weeks ago with his children and grandchildren. Clearheaded and charming to his final days, Ray continually said with joyful confidence, "I have had a good life, children I love, and a wonderful wife who I am looking forward to seeing again."
Visiting hours will be held at Swan Funeral Home in Madison from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, July 11. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 12 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph of Arimathea Church, 680 Racebrook Road, Orange, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation
