I read Dr. Nuland's book, "How We Die," about 20 years ago, and it was the first--and only--book that I ever read that I went back to page 1 and immediately read again. I am now reading it for the 4th time, and am as mesmerized as I was the first time I read it. I decided to Google Dr. Nuland's name and was sad to hear that he had died in 2014. My condolences to his family and friends who must still be missing him, indeed who will always miss him. I am grateful for having known this remarkable man through his books.

Shep was Chief Resident in Surgery while I was a Yale Medical Student and later a Resident in Surgery at Yale. He was so demanding of himself that at first I thought I wouldn't survive the pyramid of the Residency but I realized he was setting the norm for me and my colleagues. I learned the "toughness" working (for Shep) I sensed while a Resident behind him was only his way of making me want to be the best resident I could be. I wanted to be the Chief Resident at Yale too and in 1966 I was chosen as the Chief Resident in Surgery at Yale.

Peace! Shep.....

The love and grace of Dr Nuland continues on. I have just finished his book and have a new sense of peace and understanding-as I try to accept a poor diagnosis. My gratitude and my prayers to the Nuland family.

For someone so curious, probing, and full of kindness and wonder, I agree with Doug's wish -- that the mysteries of his final journey be fulfilling and beautiful. He was a remarkable person. He helped so many people and knowing him personally and through his writing enriched my world.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Back in the late 1970s Dr. Nuland wore a gold chain around his tie--he took it off one day so that I could make a tracing of it and make a similar one for my Father. He was gentle and seemed to always be smiling. So, so sorry.

I met Dr Nuland in the early 80's when he was a practicing surgeon and I was a new Radiologic Technologist at YNHH. The first time I walked into his OR he asked my name and remembered me every time thereafter with kindness and a smile. We spoke was about three summers ago when we were dining in the same restaurant. He was still the kind, genial and gracious man that I remembered and I was honored that he still remembered me. I will always remember Dr Nuland for his gentle demeanor and dedication to his patients.

Read his book in 1994, and then again in 2010 - he told the truth, and for that I am deeply grateful. He helped me to understand what we can treat, and what we shouldn't as well as what happens towards the end.

Dear Sarah: Such a wonderful man - sewed up my third son's toe when he was little, and was such a wonderful colleague in our early CT Hospice days. We are so sad for you, but hope memories of the many years you had together help overcome the sorrow. Thinking of you both with true fondness and admiration. Nikki and Sam Lindberg

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. Dr. Nuland was a fine gentleman and I consider myself very fortunate to have had the pleasure of knowing him. My family used to sit right by him and his beautiful family during the Jewish holiday services at Cong. B'nai Jacob. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Nuland family.

March 5, 2014

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to all the family. Dr. Nuland was an exceptional man, who cared for me during my extensive hospitalization. He was always there for me (sometimes three times a day and even when he was vacationing he rushed to attend to my needs.) We will always be grateful for knowing such a dedicated man.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Bill and Carol Mathews
