Stuart Low Obituary

LOW, STUART M. Stuart M. Low died March 29 in Guilford at the age of 96 of complications from a fall. He leaves his wife of 37 years, Myra Bloch Low; his daughter Barbara McBride (Lawrence); his son David (Mary Margaret); three grand-children and four great-grandchildren. His first wife, Anne Ryan Low, whom he married in 1941, died in 1971. Stuart Mayer Low was born in Scarsdale, New York, the son of Clarence and Madeleine Low. His brother Robert Low and sister Doris Hirsch predeceased him. He graduated from Choate in 1935, and from the University of Michigan in 1939. He served in the U. S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He wrote a book, “From Battle Creek to Berlin,” about the Red Ball Express and the 3609th Truck Company of which he was Captain. He later rose to the rank of Major in the Army Reserves. Mr. Low was an executive and business owner. He published the Downers Grove Journal in Illinois; was an executive in the public relations office of Pfizer and an executive at Crowell-Collier, before taking over the operation of Flents Products Co., a manufacturer of safety equipment founded by his father. He sold the business and retired at the age of 80. Mr. Low was long active in politics, serving on the Darien Democratic Town Committee, eventually as its Chairman. He was on the Darien School Board for 10 years, as well as a Democratic State Central Committeeman. He also was a member of the Connecticut Public Transportation Authority, including a term as its Chairman. Since moving to Guilford in 1992, he was on the Guilford Democratic Town Committee and on the Board of the Guilford Preservation Alliance for 6 years, serving as Treasurer for 3 years. He was an avid reader of American history and politics, a tennis player, a railroad buff with a model railroad, a sailor, and a legendary punster. Above all, he will be remembered as a gentleman, an excellent companion, and a man who cared deeply for his family and friends. Barbara and David: I am very sorry to hear that your father died. Your folks and my folks were great friends back in the day. They were like minded thinkers in the desert called Darien.
