William West Obituary

William G. West
William George "Bill" West, 84, of Chester and Deep River —treasured husband and father, talented engineer, and generous soul—died on September 20, 2022, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Friends and neighbors have been incredibly supportive.
Bill was born on December 3, 1937, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the beloved son of the late William Henry and Ellen (Haines) West. Bill graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. At a young age he was very mechanically adept. He was able to disassemble / reassemble car engines with ease. In 1964, Bill and Jane started a business in the powder metallurgy industry – National Sintered Alloys. He co-authored a book on powder metallurgy with Leander Pease III "Fundamentals of Powder Metallurgy" Bill maintained his relationship with his alma mater as a member of the Stevens Alumni Committee, served as President of the Powder Metallurgy Parts Association, and served on the Board of Directors of the Metal Powder Industries Federation.
Bill was a faithful member of the Deep River Congregational Church and a former member of First Congregational Church in Madison. He believed strongly in putting his faith into action. In addition to singing in the church choir and helping the Shoreline Soup Kitchen, Bill always tried to use his talents to improve the lives of others in his community. He was involved in Christian Community Action, the Meals on Wheels program, and assisted Habitat for Humanity. He lent his skills to raise funds for Westbrook YMCA, served as a Board of Education member in Madison, and developed amazing friendships with other community professionals as part of Madison Rotary.
When not enjoying vintage cars or ski trips, Bill found great peace and joy on the water. He was an avid sailor and longtime member of the Duck Island Yacht Club. In fact, Bill was the recipient of the "prestigious" Golden Duck Award—an honor only a small handful of valiant sailors may claim…
Though Bill loved his work and community, he was undoubtedly a true family man. Nothing brought more happiness into his heart than the love from his dedicated wife—Jane West—and their beautiful children and grandchildren. Bill was so proud of all their accomplishments and was a source of encouragement and joy for all their successes. He led an amazing life filled with unconditional love and hearty laughter, never forgetting to help and serve his community along the way. Bill will forever be dearly loved and missed, and his memory will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jane Combs (Ferguson) West; his adored children, Steve West and his wife, Karen, Greg West, Jim West, and Sharon Calatayud and her husband, Tom; his 11 cherished grandchildren; and his niece, Rebecca Leigh West-Remmey and her husband, Greg Remmey. Bill is also survived by his sister, Joan Jephson – husband Bob. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jonathan West.
All are welcome to join Bill's family for a memorial service at 1:00PM on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Deep River Congregational Church, 1 Church St., Deep River, CT 06417. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to Deep River Congregational Church or a charity of choice.

11/16/2022 ~ I googled Bill´s name to notify him of the death of my brother Harry(Jugy)Newton a former employee of National Sintered Alloys, Inc., on this day, when his obituary came up. I was shocked to read that he had passed. I was also an employee of his Company and thought of him and his family as friends. I looked forward to their Christmas Card and family news letter for many years. My sincerest condolences to Jane and the family. This came as a real surprise with much sadness to read of his passing. We met Bill and Jane in the Grand Cayman where we were invited to be part of the "Cayman Senior Pool" group as we refered to ourselves. We shared dinners at each other's condos, afternoons chatting and sharing stories around the pool, dinners out to celebrate Valentines Day each year, and song fests in the evening around the Pool where Bill could keep us all in tune. Our friendship grew into embracing their entire family, with stops on our way to visit as we went to the Berkshires, and inviting us to know and love their Pastor Tim. Our hearts are sad but our souls are full of love and thanksgiving for having him in our lives. Until we meet again, Love, Franz and Effie

I spent time with Bill the last couple of months. Telephone chats,
visits to deliver his favorite scones "TutyFruity" and just hang out for awhile. We talked a lot. He fought a great fight. He was thoughtful and gracious. He will be missed but none er forgotten. Peace & Shalom my friend.

Just saw Bill West´s obituary and Jane West has my wife Maureen and my condolences. Bill and I went to Bloomfield NJ High School. We both attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken NJ. Bill and I carpooled our freshman year. Bill had a 1950 Ford 2 door coupe with dual exhaust with glass pack mufflers, lowered and rear fender skirts. I had a 53 VW bug. In our senior years Bill took powder metallurgy that led to having his own company. Bill became a worldwide expert in the field. I live in Arizona and attended the major Class of 59 Stevens reunions. Bill and Jane were always there. Several years ago, Bill and Jane came to Arizona for the Barrett Jackson car auction. I happened to have VIP passes and we all had a great time even though we didn´t buy anything. Again, Jane we are very sorry for the loss of Bill. May he rest in peace.

Bill and Jane and family were a large part of our lives for about 50 years.
We brought our kids up together, first at the Surf Club and FCC in Madison, then on into our DIYC sailing days. We were friendly competitors, but mostly collaborators in bringing up kids, skiing and traveling together, not to forget Grand Cayman every February for 30+-years. We worked together on community projects like CCA and Habitat . Bill gave every project serious attention and positive energy.
He has left this world a better place by his efforts. This can be seen in his accomplished children and grandchildren. He gave life his all, and will be missed. Rest In Peace, Bill
