John McCoy Obituary

VERNON - John Joseph McCoy, 84, of the Highland Lakes section of Vernon, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 5.
Born in Hackensack, John was the son of the late John and Elizabeth McCoy, and brother to Irene (Reenie), James and Joseph. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a corporal during the Korean War and continued to serve his community as a firefighter in North Bergen for 31 years, most of which he served as a fire captain. John was also a professional roofer and auto mechanic, and a carpenter, plumber and electrician at his home and those of family, friends and neighbors.
In his free time, John enjoyed serving as captain of the boat while fishing on "the big lake" with family and friends, manning the barbecue grill on his deck for countless family get-togethers, watching the birds from the kitchen and doting on his grandkids at every opportunity. A true gentleman who was generous beyond words with his time and skills, John will be remembered by family, friends and neighbors as bringing his tool box wherever he went, along with a few stories about good times.
A devout Catholic, John was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Chapel, in Pequannock, and member of the traditional third order of Our Blessed Lady of Mt. Carmel, Our Holy Mother of St. Teresa of Jesus and the confraternity of St. Peter.
John is survived by his wife, Marie; his children, Susan Wefer and her husband, Richard, John McCoy and his wife, Susan, Judy Porco and her husband, Mario, and James McCoy and his wife, Frances; his grandchildren, Allison and her fiancé, Matthew, Cassandra and her husband, Cory, Eric, Kevin and his wife, Lauren, Michael, Marianne, Richard, Katherine, John, Matthew, Sarah, Joseph, Therese, Annemarie, Nicholas, Timothy and Christina; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Oliver and Elaina.
Visiting hours will be held today from 2-6 p.m., at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A traditional Latin Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 9, at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel, Pequannock. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Magnificat Church Cemetery, Kinnelon.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory to Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, PO Box 247, Denton, NE 68339 or St. Benedict's Center, PO Box 1000, Still River, MA 01467 would be greatly appreciated by his family.
