I cannot remember a time when Rudy Vernie wasn´t in my life until recently. (Thankfully, Jimi, his wife, still is. I´m also FB pals with his kids.) As a pediatrician, he took care of me from when I was a tyke to age 16, when he finally relented and took my tonsils out. (The good doctor called it my "sore troat" in his Dutch- accented English. I always loved the fact that he was so very cautious about taking out resourceful parts of the body. That´s how good of a physician he was, but he was a wonderful human being, as well. When Mom, Dad and I visited him at his Mom´s house in the Netherlands, she told the story of hiding Rudy and his equally tall brother in cramped spaces in between the floorboards of their old house. This was necessary because Hitler was drafting Dutch teens and sending them to the front to be killed before his highly prized German troops. "It was very cramped," Rudy said. "My brother and I were there from sun up to sundown. We came out only at night." Such was Hitler´s menace. He and Dad in particular bonded over their WWII experience. I think Rudy appreciated the fact that Dad sign up to fight. At any rate, Dad and Mom were friends with Dr. Vernie for as long as they were alive - even vacationing together! That´s compatibility! I will miss and adore Rudy for as long as I live.
