I'm so sorry to hear of Len's passing. He was a wonderful, warm man, full of kindness, learning and sharing. We became friends working at Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Len was in many ways the most important friend I had. I owe my 30+ year teaching career to Len. I was in a Shakespeare class at SF State U. I was lost amid the language. Len sat with me for days on end teaching me to read correctly - not just Shakespeare, he taught me to read everything correctly. I became an English and history teacher at the high school, college, and grad levels. I recently retired and hoped to find him to tell him how important he is to me even today. I tell the story of Len often. Reading deeply and correctly defined who I became as a teacher. His lessons live on in my students and their children. He had a wonderful laugh, a gift he gave that said, I understand, you're correct. We battled on the tennis court, ate breakfast in his tiny apartment, and read together for hours on many, many days. He gave me my wings. If only I had found him sooner - I looked for him a few times without luck. His faith sustained him and he sustained me, despite my secular choices. This is one person I truly value, and I will cherish his memory forever. His passing is a great loss on many levels to the human family. I offer warm regards to anyone who was touched by Len.
