Bernard Ast Obituary

Bernard Edward Ast Jr., Ph.D., "Benz", a devoted brother, esteemed educator, published author, honorable correctional officer, and compassionate soul, passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 62. Bernard was born on June 6, 1963, to Bernard Edward Ast Sr. and Bella Amanda Ast (Scrivner) in Gary, Indiana; later moving to Nogales, Mexico with his family where he flourished during his youth.
Bernard's academic journey was marked by excellence. He graduated as Valedictorian from Nogales High School in 1982, and later pursued his passion for learning at the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's in French, and a Doctorate of Philosophy with a major in French in 1998. His fluency in English, Spanish, and French allowed him to connect with a diverse array of individuals, and he dedicated his professional life to serving as a Correctional Officer 2 at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence, East Unit. His colleagues and those he supervised admired his unwavering kindness and genuine nature, confirming that he was a person who made all feel they mattered.
A lover of the arts and a skilled gardener, Bernard found joy in nurturing plants and was particularly passionate about gardening and orchids-a treasured bond he shared with his father. His hobbies extended to gazing at the stars, where his love for astronomy ignited wonder and curiosity. Bernard was a man of great integrity, known for his generosity and always willing to lend a helping hand. His infectious sense of humor and thoughtful gestures, such as never forgetting a birthday or holiday, made him a cherished member of his family and community.
Bernard is survived by his beloved siblings: Maria, Martha, Luis, Richard, Helena, and Roberto Ast, his Goddaughter, Lourdes Ast, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom carry his legacy forward in their hearts.
As we remember Bernard Edward Ast Jr., we celebrate a life that was a testament to kindness, laughter, and an unwavering spirit of love.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents Bernard Ast and Amanda Ast.
