Adolph Fransen Obituary

Adolph Remy Fransen, Jr. was born in New Orleans on March 11, 1936. He was the son of Adolph Remy Fransen, Sr. and Eba Gondolf Fransen and brother to Suzette Cain. Remy died peacefully on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the age of 88. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School and the University of Notre Dame, his father's alma mater. Remy went on to graduate from Harvard Law School, where he won the prestigious Ames Moot Court Competition in 1961. He also received a JD from Tulane Law School in civil law, and practiced law at the firms he founded, Wiedemann & Fransen and Fransen & Hardin, where he worked with his sons Christopher and Matthew. Remy was a consummate lawyer, and one of the last true, old-school gentlemen in his practice. A notable figure in the legal world, Remy was a past president of the New Orleans Association of Defense Counsel, and was a long-time member of the Board of Governors and Council of Directors of the Louisiana Association for Justice (formerly the LTLA) He was also a Master of the Thomas More Inn of Court and appeared before the United States Supreme Court, Louisiana Supreme Court and all lower appellate courts. He truly loved the practice of law, but not as much as he loved his wife of 48 years, Eugenie "Boodie" Lyons Fransen. Boodie and Remy indulged their love of travel, especially to the slopes of Snowmass, Colorado, and the streets of Paris. Remy was known for his keen intellect, insatiable love of history, booming voice, incredible storytelling, and his love of life. He was always up for conviviality – from dinner at Galatoire's to a "drinkie-poo" on his porch. Remy was preceded in death by his parents and wife Boodie. He is survived by his four children, Remi' Fransen Ottelin (Bill), Christopher J. Fransen (Jack), Rebecca Fransen Worley (Tommy), and Matthew Remy Fransen and his wife Keflyn Hecker Fransen. Remy was a loving grandfather to Caroline Ottelin Shaw (Will) and Douglas Ottelin, Olivia, Grayson and Eugenie Worley, and Jackson and Will Fransen. Remy was lucky enough to welcome his first great-grandchild, James Shaw, on May 29, 2024. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Remy's life at The Gilded Perch in the Parkview Hotel on Friday, June 14, 2024, 7004 St. Charles Avenue from 5 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome contributions to the Adolph Fransen Scholarship Fund at the University of Notre Dame, Department of Development, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be signed online at lakelawnmetairie.com.

My memories of Remy are all wonderful. He was an elegant and classy man and very easy on the eyes. We had very interesting conversations while drinking a cup of coffee. Occasionally you could bump into him at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. His love of the Law was very obvious when stepping into the offices of Fransen and Hardin. He was a special man. I am honored to have known him.

Dear me, Remy is gone. He was a first-class lawyer and a first-class person. I knew him from 1956, when he and I worked together at a summer job for Merrill Lynch, and we were in the same class at Tulane Law in the 1960s. There is a legal maxim "A right without a remedy is no right at all," but we used to say in class, "A right without a Remy is no right at all," in deference to our outstanding classmate. And Remy, Booddie and I used to have a drink together off an on for decades after that. Remy was such a good lawyer that he was in demand to represent both plaintiffs and defendants in damage-suit litigation, a privilege accorded to very few lawyers, only the very top ones. My respect for him is boundless. My condolences to all his survivors, you've lost a Champ. - Joe Stahl
