Albert Stevenson Obituary

Albert Edward Stevenson departed this life on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. He was born on July 24, 1923 to the late Obadiah Albert Stevenson and the late Edwarda Fields Stevenson in New Orleans, LA. He and his sister, the late Thelma Stevenson Tollerson, grew up in New Orleans and were members of a faithful Methodist family attending Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was educated in New Orleans and attended Valena C. Jones Elementary School, Gilbert Academy High School and graduated from Dillard University in 1947. In 1954 he married Azalea Morant and they were the proud parents of Dr. Rodrick Albert Stevenson. Albert worked faithfully in the church at Mt. Zion and sang in the chancel choir. After graduating from Dillard, he worked at Dillard with veterans counseling and support then went on to work for the city of New Orleans as a Taxicab Bureau Investigator in the Department of Utilities where he retired after over 30 years of service. Albert served for several years on the New Orleans Aviation Board. He and Azie lived in New Orleans all of their lives until Hurricane Katrina when they relocated to State College, PA. In New Orleans, Albert who was also called Stacy, Ed, and Al, was a social butterfly. He belonged to several clubs, the Gaylords, the Kingsman, the Four Pals and the Capetowners Mardi Gras club. He was a longtime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity having been initiated into Beta Gamma Chapter at Dillard University. He loved to entertain at his home and was an excellent cook. Albert was a friend to all and loved to live life to the fullest. After arriving in State College after Katrina, he and Azie were introduced to the community through Albright Bethune United Methodist Church where they met and became great friends with Drs. Blannie and Cathy Bowen and the late Dr. Terrell Jones and his wife Carla. There were others in State College who became surrogate family to them including Brian and Christina Johnson, Nehemiah and Tammy and Lisa Warren and many others. Albert became the chairman of the board of trustees at Albright Bethune and worked faithfully there. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Caldene Stevenson and Thelma Tollerson and his nephew Tony Tollerson. He leaves behind Azalea, his wife of 67 years, son, Dr. Rodrick (Dr. Karen) Stevenson, nephew, Steven Jay (Sherry) Tollerson, great niece Danielle (Abe) Blanco, Grandchildren, Dr. Cecily (Dr. Darren) Anthony, Christopher Stevenson, Charlotte Hall, Corey Stevenson, greatgrandchildren, Doralynn Anthony and, Laiyah, Julian, Maia, Hall, Hendrixx Stevenson, Kayla and Leah Tollerson, and Blaise and Beckham Blanco and nephew Ashton Spann and a host of additional family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to the general fund at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA, his beloved alma mater. A memorial was scheduled but will be postponed until further notice due to Covid safety concerns.

I remember visiting Mr Albert & Mrs Azalea before Katrina and was made to feel absolutely welcomed. He was a very charming man and they made the perfect couple! Sorry for your loss. My love to you and the Family!

I am very shocked to hear of the passing of my very dear dear friend. He was the bestman when Lionel(no deceased) and I got married. We stayed in touch for years. I heart is saddened. Tell Azie and the family I will left them in prayers. Stacy and Lionel sang in the choir at Mt Zion United Methodis Church here in New Orleans, La. We spent many Mardi Gras at their home. Stacy lived a beautiful life and will truly be missed.

I am sorry for your loss. It seems Albert lived a full life and was a real friend to many. May you find comfort in the company of your loved ones, and in knowing of God´s promise that you can see Albert again. He even says that "[He] will long for the work of [his] hands." He longs to bring Albert back to life and to you.
