Armant Touchy Obituary

Armant C. Touchy, MD passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the age of 93 from respiratory complications. He was married 66 years to Gloria Miller Touchy. He was the son of Henry and Nellie Touchy of Lake Charles, La. Along with his wife, he is survived by five children, Michael (Kathy), Susan, Armant II (Liz), John and Dr. James Touchy. Dr. Touchy is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelly, Dr. Michael (Ashley) and Armant III Touchy. He was in the first graduating class of the then newly opened, McNeese State Junior College. Thereafter, he enrolled and graduated from LSU in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and fought in WW II as a pilot who flew "The Hump" (the Himalayans) in the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theater. Flying over 100 missions, Dr. Touchy won the Distinguished Flying Cross four times, numerous Bronze Stars, as well as US and Chinese medals of honors. He was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of captain. He returned home and enrolled in LSU Medical School and graduated in 1950. After spending five years in general practice in Colorado and Alabama, he returned to New Orleans to complete his OB/GYN residency at Charity Hospital. He then went into private practice and was affiliated with Baptist Hospital. In 1972, Dr. Touchy and other physicians opened the OB/GYN unit at East Jefferson General Hospital and he practiced there until his retirement in 1986, delivering over 4,000 babies during his active career. After retiring, he spent many hours a week at his farm in McNeil, MS, where he raised registered short-horn cattle. At the same time, Dr. Touchy fulfilled his passion for painting. Eventually and up unto just before his death, he completed over 150 original oil paintings, which currently decorate his home in Old Metairie. He was a past member for the Hump Pilots Association, numerous national, regional, state, and parish medical societies and associations, St. Francis Xavier Parish Church, and Metairie County Club. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 12 Noon on Monday, February 2, 2015. Visitation will be from 10AM until 12 Noon prior to the Mass. I worked at Eyecare for over 3 years and Dr Touchy was one of my favorites. He was always entertaining the waiting room and me. He was funny. I loved seeing him walk in for his appointments. I moved to Florida the 1st of the year and was so sad when Sylvia texted me that he died in January.

Gloria: Rosemarie and I are so sorry for your loss. You and Touch were such great friends to my parents and us at Metairie Country Club. Dr. Touchy was so special in his care of Rosie with the birth of our three children. He was so friendly and happy when we even saw him. Your family had a great father. Love, Bob McCoy

Dr. Touchy delivered by first child in 1970 at the old Lakeside Hospital in Metairie. He was my doctor for my second pregnancy as well in 1973. Saw him for many years to follow. Absolutely wonderful, caring man. I was so thankful to have such a good doctor. Always made me feel at ease. I am so sorry for the family's loss. Dr. Touchy was blessed with long life, and quite an interesting one at that. He will always be remembered fondly.

To the family of Dr Touchy: Dr Touchy delivered all 3 of my children, 2 at Baptist and 1 at East Jefferson. At 20 and carrying my 1st child, I was really nervous and scared. Dr Touchy put me at ease with my 1st visit with his great sense of humor. I loved, loved, loved him. My deepest sympathy to all of his family and friends. May God comfort all his family and friends. RIP, Dr Touchy.
