Arturo Gonzalez Obituary

Dr. Arturo Gonzalo Gonzalez passed peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, LA at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving Louisiana family. Arturo lived in Tampa, FL for over 60 years and spent the last three years living with his daughter, Debbie and son-in-law, Rod in Louisiana. He is preceded in death by his late wife Marcella Elizabeth Forget Gonzalez. He is survived by his children: Marcia Gonzalez Monroe (Dane), Deborah Gonzalez Rotolo (Rod) and Arthur Gonzalez; his grandchildren: Caitlin Hunter (Nathan), Maureen Raffray (Jacob), Kevin O'Sullivan, Peter Gonzalez and Rachel Gonzalez; his great-grandchildren: Brooke Hunter, Zoe Raffray. He is also survived by his grandchildren by marriage: Jarrod Rotolo, Sean Rotolo and Dominique Rotolo (Olivia, Jolie and Brie). Arturo was born January 10, 1924 in Havana, Cuba to Carmen Catalina Abella and Arturo Couceiro Gonzalez. He graduated from high school at age 15, after skipping three grades. Arturo received his M.D. degree from the University of Havana in 1946. That same year he immigrated to the U.S. to pursue a medical internship at Mother Cabrini Hospital in Chicago, IL where he met his wife, Marcella, a registered nurse. They married in 1949 and moved to Middletown, NY where Arturo entered a residency in psychiatry. In 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Army as Captain in the Medical Corp. stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY with the 101st Airborne Division. Arturo received a Q Clearance, evaluating the mental health of U.S. Army men working in an atomic bomb depot, and was one of a select number of psychiatrists assigned to debrief our released Korean War veterans in 1954. After 2-3 years of service Arturo was honorably discharged from the army, and in 1955 he and his family moved to Tampa, FL where he joined Samuel Hibbs and Associates (later named Gonzalez, Walker and Webb) , a private practice of psychiatry. Arturo was the recipient of numerous awards of recognition and outstanding performance throughout his years of medical practice. During Arturo's years of practicing Forensic Psychiatry he became very well known for many high-profile legal cases. He so loved the courtroom and had so many stories to share. He is mentioned with grandeur in the book The Lobster Boy for his always fashionable style of dress and panache. Arturo practiced medicine for over 60 years, retiring at the age of 80 in Tampa, which he always referred to as his home. At his retirement in 2004 he honorably received the key to the city of Tampa. After officially retiring from private practice Arturo continued to work in the psychiatric field by consulting at various psychiatric hospitals. Arturo was an active member of Mensa and an avid lover of travel, fine wines, art, music, literature, tennis, chess and of course Las Vegas. A private Celebration of Art's Life will be held in July. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Tampa, FL on August 6, 2016.

Please give Art's beloved family our deepest condolences for their loss of such a great and long time friend of ours! Since the "Singleton Seafood!" Days! Jesse Gonzalez became President of the Singleton Seafood Company in 1981, after ConAgra bought it from Mr. Henry "Booty" Singleton who was also a long time friend of Dr. Arturo Gonzalez's! Jesse and his current wife of 31 years, Jennifer spent many great times together, enjoying the Broadway Plays of NYC in December staying at the "Pierre Hotel" with Art and his then wife Harriet! Jesse and Jennifer Gonzalez also have many fond memories of our many trips together to Las Vegas, first Caesar's Palace then at the newly opened Bellagio Hotel and also The "Mansion in Turtle Creek" in Dallas for a fabulous New Year's Eve together and many more together at Tampa's Donatello's! We will always remember his kindness and friendship between the two of our couples! Also we have met and know his daughter who lived here in Tampa, Debbie and his son who was living in Orlando, Arthur! We enjoyed visiting with both of them during his "80th!" Birthday Party at the Monte Carlo Towers! We will always love and miss him! We would like to hear from Debbie or his son Arthur anytime he or she would like to call us at 813-948-3368! May he rest in peace and our deepest sympathies for all of his children and grandchildren! Sincerely, Jesse and Jennifer Gonzalez 4124 Highland Park Circle, Lutz, Fla.,33558
