Ashton Peyrefitte Obituary

Ashton George ("Perry") Peyrefitte, Jr., Ph.D., died on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at East Jefferson General Hospital from complications of diabetes. He was 76. Born in New Orleans on October 5, 1942, Dr. Peyrefitte graduated from De La Salle High School. Soon after, as a member of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, he discovered his love of teaching when he served as an instructor at Saint Aloysius High School in New Orleans in the 1964–65 school year. After leaving the order, he attended Florida State University, earning his Bachelor of Science in 1967 and Master of Science in meteorology in 1969. He earned his Doctorate in Meteorology from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1986; his dissertation, The Plateau Anticyclone of the Western United States, was published that same year. His university teaching career spanned over four decades, beginning at the State University College of New York at Oneonta from 1972 through 1980. He began his 14-year tenure at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor, and earned the distinction of Associate Professor Emeritus in 1999. From 2000 until his retirement in 2016, Dr. Peyrefitte taught at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. Throughout his career, he engaged in research and made several regional and national presentations, received numerous teaching awards, and maintained membership in professional societies, including the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. Even after his return to New Orleans, Dr. Peyrefitte continued to educate and share his knowledge of meteorology, this time with his fellow retirees, as an instructor for the New Orleans People Program. Dr. Peyrefitte will always be remembered for his love of meteorology, his love of teaching, and his boundless generosity. He had an amazing gift for explaining complex meteorological concepts to beginners as well as to advanced students. Dr. Peyrefitte's students were his "kids," and he spoiled them with food, candy, king cakes, and even dinner at New Orleans' finest restaurants when they were in town visiting or at a conference. Many of his students have gone on to prominent careers in meteorology, including several familiar faces in the National Broadcast Media. Whenever weather threatened, he would extend his expertise to friends and family to keep them safe and informed-his family especially welcomed the "hurricane updates" that provided his careful analysis of tropical activity. Dr. Peyrefitte is survived by his sisters, Bonnie Peyrefitte Hebeisen and Lynn Peyrefitte Rodriguez; his half-sister, Sally Peyrefitte Firestone, and brother-in-law, John Firestone, Jr., M.D.; his stepbrother, Antonio Padial; his nieces, Shelley Hebeisen Reinecke and Cheri Ann Hebeisen, as well as his grandnieces, many cousins, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ashton G. Peyrefitte, Sr., and Melba Parpal Peyrefitte; his stepmother, Sylvia Guerchoux Peyrefitte; his brothers, Gregory A. Peyrefitte and Keith J. Peyrefitte; and his stepsister, Anita Padial. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Monday, September 9, 2019, at JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM, followed by a service at 1:30 PM. To sign and view the family guestbook, please visit www.schoenfh.com.

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Perry when reading the In Memoriam section of Plymouth State University magazine. As a student of his during the early 1990s, I have fond memories of Perry's passion to work with and educate all students interested in learning about meteorology with many of those conversations happening on weekends and late nights while he worked in the weather lab. His generosity of providing donuts to students was much appreciated and a trademark we all became accustomed to. All of my Synoptic meteorology learning was from Perry and I know several classmates during that time who would say the same. He was a well-respected brilliant Professor and kind person, who will surely be missed but memories of those college days as a student in Perry's class will remain and his love of meteorology will live on by those fortunate enough to have been mentored by him. My condolences to Perry's family.

Sorry to hear of my classmate's death. Even in his late teens he LOVED meteorology.

I am saddened to learn that the amazing Perry passed. He was always around the meteorology lab if you had a question or wanted to talk local weather. His knowledge on synoptic and tropical weather was never ending and he loved passing it onto his students. I learned about proper pralines and Kings Cake because of him. While I was in grad school in North Dakota it was not the same because Perry wasn't there to make you smile or to lecture about how the next weather system was actually looking. He cared about teaching and about his students. I haven't met another professor quite like him. You will be missed Perry.

Perry and I graduated from De La Salle in 1961.
Only seniors at that time were allowed to have cars and park nearby. Perry often would drive me home in our senior year.

Bonnie, I am very saddened by his passing. Do you remember the nice lunch the three of us had a few years ago at Vincent's on St. Charles Ave?
On August 29, 2019, Perry sent me an E-mail stating: "When you get to New Orleans, call me." [I am in the process of returning back to my native city]. Sadly, God's plans where that I would never see Perry again. BUT, I will never forget him!!
My deepest condolences to Perry's family.

I had the privilege of learning from Dr. Peyrefitte when I was in the CMU meteorology program between 2002 and 2006. Dr. Peyrefitte was genuinely one of the kindest people I have ever known and I am sad to hear of his passing. Reading in his obituary that he considered his students his kids was spot on. I'll never forget the following: him being genuinely upset that none of his Michigan students knew what a "king cake" or "prainline" was, to educate us, he bought cases of them and handed them out in class. Him explaining to his new students how to pronounce his last name, "pair uh feet", the time he had planned to attend a severe weather conference with our local chapter of the AMS but he never showed up, upon returning to Mount Pleasant for class the next week, he explained that the frame of his Pontiac Sunbird broke in half while he was driving down and he had to miss the conference, he was passionate about synoptic hand analysis, 'Priciples of Meteorological Analysis' by Saucier, and hand plotting the liquid and meltwater equivalent precipitation twice daily on campus. He meant everything to his students and they meant everything to him. I am truly blessed to have know and learned from such a brilliant and kind man.
