Barbara Johnson Bensel

Barbara Johnson Bensel, age 81 years, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Mrs. Bensel was a native of and lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church, and was a longtime member of the Elenians Club and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was very active in the Catholic Church, often leading and attending Catholic Eucharistic Adoration at parishes throughout the city. A primary homemaker for the vast portion of her life, she had a keen passion for sewing which allowed her the opportunity to create and sew Mardi Gras costumes for Carnival krewes for many years. Always the life of the party, she had a proclivity for a glass of wine or martini, a $2 bet on the heavy favorite in the Kentucky Derby and always keeping up to date on the varied and interesting endeavors of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She welcomed all and made everyone laugh. She is preceded in death by her former husband, Donald Edward Bensel, passing away October 15, 1989. She is survived by her three children, Terri Bensel Horn (Scott), Gregory Charles Bensel (Jane) and Kristin Bensel Koster (Kirk). The focus and love of her life was her six grandchildren; Ashley Lynn Hodges (Michael), Danielle Marie Horn, Hannah Lynn Koster (Preston), Brooke Ann Koster, Kate Faulkner Bensel, Nelson Charles Bensel and her two great grandchildren; Sawyer Lynn Hodges and Lincoln Michael Hodges. Her loving and caring personality will forever be ingrained in each of them. The family is grateful to those that selflessly cared for her later in life, she loved you all. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 775 Harrison Ave. New Orleans, LA 70124, on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 11:30 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment will follow in Hope Mausoleum. Arrangements entrusted to Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home.
