Bert Glass Obituary
Bert A. Glass, M.D., age 81 years, who died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 3:57 p.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, after a brief struggle with lung cancer. Survivors include: his wife, Gloria B. Glass, of Sunset, LA to whom he was happily married for over sixty years; daughter, Gloria G. Stanavage and her husband, Frank, of San Francisco, California; daughter, Cynthia G. Chappuis and her husband, Charles, of Sunset, LA; son, Bert A. Glass, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Kenner, LA; son, Michael L. Glass and his wife, Patricia, of Alexandria, LA; daughter, Melissa G. Cole of Houston, Texas; and ten grandchildren: Billy, Earth, Liberty, Bryan, Tracy, Trinity, Courtney, Benjamin, Catherine, and Kristy, as well as loving nieces and nephews. Dr. Glass was preceded in death by his parents: Lee and Bertha Glass; one sister, Amy McDonald; and one brother, Charles Glass. Dr. Glass was a native of Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Glass was a former resident of New Orleans, LA for twenty five years and also of El Paso, Texas for twenty-five years. He was a veteran of military service, having served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where he flew seventy two missions in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After his Honorable Discharge from the service, he became a surgeon and practiced medicine for nearly fifty years, specializing in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He held teaching appointments in the Department of Surgery for many years at LSU Medical School in New Orleans, LA, and later at Texas Tech in El Paso, Texas. He had a long and well respected private practice in New Orleans. He always rejoiced or wept with his patients and their families, as the need arose, and he was, in turn, loved by them. He was an avid bible student, golfer, hunter, and football fan. In his later years, he became an author of poems and short stories, winning prizes in the El Paso Writers' League. He educated and inspired his five children, as well as countless medical students and surgery residents. Dr. Glass deeply loved God and Jesus, his wife, his family, his many friends and peers, his students, and his patients. He was an honest and honorable man, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Glass' close friend and minister, Reverend Mike Woods, of El Paso, Texas, will conduct the funeral services. The family requests that visiting hours be observed Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Pallbearers will be Bert Glass, Jr., Michael Glass, Charles Chappuis, Jr., Frank Stanavage, William Legier, Jr., Bryan Glass and Benjamin Glass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Glass' name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 52884, Lafayette, Louisiana 70505-2884.
