Brenda Zaeringer Obituary

(September 17, 1965 - February 11, 2018) Brenda Marie Zaeringer, a retired social worker for the Jefferson Parish School System for more than 20 years, died Feb. 11 after a brave battle against glioblastoma. She was 52. She was a resident of New Orleans. She was the youngest of four children and grew up in Metairie. She enjoyed many summers as a camper, then later, as a counselor at Camp Abbey in Covington. She served as an assistant director at Camp Abbey for three years. She was a natural with children. She was not a mother herself, but worked as a nursery volunteer at her church in her youth and always enjoyed babysitting. She loved her 11 nieces and nephews like her own. She was a graduate of Cabrini High School, where she worked on the school newspaper. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Orleans and a Master's in Social Work from Tulane University. For most of her career, she was an early intervention specialist in the Jefferson Parish School System and a founding member of the Crisis Team. She had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. She would entertain her family and friends with her incredible power to recount a story and share a lesson at the same time. Even in the face of unknown and intense life trials, she always reminded others that all we can do is take life's punches and big decisions as they come, one day at a time. "I just think that's what our goals in life should be. … Let's touch some lives and leave people a little bit better," she would say. She took delight in sharing meals with good friends. After her retirement in 2014, she spent much of her free time helping with the care of elderly and ill family and friends. In the last three months of her life, her work colleagues (aka "her peeps"), other close friends, neighbors and her family came together as a community to care for Brenda. She was predeceased by her father Jerome Joseph Zaeringer. She will be dearly missed by her loving mother, Marilyn Carey Zaeringer; her sister, Mary Z. Bolner (Glenn); two brothers, Kevin Zaeringer (Sloan) and Steven Zaeringer (Wendy); her nieces and nephews, Hannah Bolner Tramuta (Joseph), Sarah Bolner Warner (William), Nathan Bolner, Celia, Connor, and Sophia Zaeringer, and Abigail, Joseph, Rachel, and Peter Zaeringer; her great-nephew, Oliver Warner. The family is forever grateful for the loving care displayed by all of Brenda's "peeps," friends, and family. Thanks to all of the healthcare providers and the sitters, and the Sister Servants of Mary who assisted in her care. If you would like to continue Brenda's legacy of service to others, she would have appreciated donations to Camp Abbey Summer Camp or to Brens Joy, Inc., a non-profit set up by Brenda's family. Visit brensjoy.org for more information. A memorial and celebration of her life will take place Friday March 2 at Camp Abbey, 77002 KC Camp Rd, in Covington starting at 10 a.m. A close friend, Rev. Peadar Dalton, will officiate the service.

We like to extend our condolences to Brenda's family likewise. We met Brenda in 2016 at Mardi Gras in her home in New Oleans together with our friend Chuck and Kevin's family. We had a good time together and get to know her as a very nice and hospitable person. Brenda will stay in our memory.

I want to extend my condolences to the Zaeringer Family. I have known Brenda since she was in high school and her brother and I attended college together. She was always kind and welcoming and I appreciate her for that. I know how much she meant to her family and they to her and know this is a terrible loss.

Thanks, Brenda, for giving your every ounce of energy to all the people in your life. You were always so generous, so loving, and also so present to God's call to "Come, good and faithful servant...."

To my other big sis', I sure do miss you! Over the past several months I have heard you periodically tell the story of how excited you would get when you would come home from school as a child and see my playpen at your house, as it indicated I was there. Fast forward over forty-years and I can honestly say that I felt your excitement when we would get together, because that is just how well you loved the people in your life. You truly delighted in the people that you cared about! I feel so blessed to be one of those people! Your unparalleled compassion for people, zest for life, courage and sense of humor are just a few of the many things that I loved and will miss about you. While heartbroken, I remember how you loved and lived and will honor your life by continuing to do much of the same! I love you! -Andrea

Do Not Go To My Graveside And Weep,
I am Not There I Do Not Sleep,
I am The Thousand Winds That Blow,
I Am The Diamond Glints On Show,
I Am The Gentle Autumn Rain,
I Am The Sunlight On Ripened Grain,

When You Awaken In The Morning Hush,
I Am The Swift Uplifting Rush Of Quiet Birds In Circled Flight,
I Am The Soft Star That Shines A Night,
Do Not Stand At My Graveside And Cry, I Am Not There, I Did Not Die.

I'm really at a loss for words. Bren, you have been my sister and friend since we were 5 yrs old. You have always had an enthusiastic zest for life that was contagious. You fought cancer like a boss, twice, and only asked for a little more time to spend with family and friends. You never met a stranger or had a bad word about anyone. You have taken a piece of my heart with you to heaven. You have taught me how to live in the moment, enjoy the simple things in life (like a good meal and ice cream), and to always say yes. You have challenged me to be a better person by living my life more like you did. I love you my friend and look forward to seeing you again. JOY forever. Lau

I love you my friend,my sister. I can't seem to find the right words to do you justice. You are my hero, my inspiration, and the person that I am going to strive to be more like from this day on. You never met a stranger or had a mean word to say. You fought cancer like a boss and never lost hope that you would at least have more time on this earth. You spread joy everywhere you went and lived life to its fullest, even if that only meant enjoying a good meal. There is a hole in my heart because you took that piece with you. We have been together since the age of 5 and will be reunited again someday. Be at peace my friend. Your friendship has changed my life forever. Love you always, Lau (Laure Rooney)

Words and tears cannot convey how much you are missed, how much you are loved, and the sorrow and pride I feel when I think of your bravery and fortitude. I will forever remember your words, I am not afraid to die, only angry that I have not been given more time to help others, especially those fighting this disease alone.
May we all carry on this dedication to help others and bring joy. Rest In peace sweet Brenda.

As Brenda's supervisor for several years,I can certainly attest to many of the qualities that made her a special person. She had the rare gift of being able to work independently and also work with others with the same energy and generosity of spirit.
She was beloved by her co-workers as well the students she worked with tirelessly.
I offer my condolences to her family "her peeps" and all of her other friends. May the wonderful memories serve as a comfort to all of you in this difficult time
