Catherine Maloney Obituary

Catherine Canal Maloney passed away at her home in Covington, LA. on December 10, 2022 after a brief illness. She was 86. A native of Woodside, Louisiana born to the late Loretta and Anna Torina Canal. She was married to the love of life, the late Charles Ranval Maloney, Prominent New Orleans Attorney who passed away in September of 1981. Mrs. Maloney graduated from Soule Business College and in the the early 1990's received a second college degree in Computer Science. She ran her husband's law firm in the Richards Building in Downtown New Orleans until the time of his death. She then went to work for Judge Niles Helmers as a Minute Clerk for the Orleans Parish Courts until her retirement in 1999. She loved to travel near and far; as she would say, "have passport will travel". She and Charlie flew on the Concord, loved their travels to Europe and Asia, enjoyed fine dining, and always appreciated a good martini. She and Charlie were great dancers, which may or may not be related to their affection for good martinis. She held season tickets with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, The New Orleans Opera Association, and the New Orleans Ballet. She was very involved with the New Orleans Museum of Art where she attended every function, and she gave generously to The World War II Museum from it's conception. A true lover of the arts, she was a benefactor to all of the above. All of her siblings predeceased her including the late Peter Canal, Rose Canal Hart Prentice, Annie Deliberto, Constance Canal, Josephine Galiano, Joseph Canal, and her twin brother Carlo Canal. She also is predeceased by two nieces and one nephew JoAnn Galiano, Mary Ann Hart Mayberry, and Michael Canal. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored. Catherine was also a lifelong animal lover and she loved her dogs fiercely. They gave her great peace and unconditional love and nothing gave her more joy than spoiling them rotten. Those that were lucky enough to be in her good graces would all agree that she had a wicked sense of humor and was always ready with a good comeback that could put you in your place and crack you up at the same time. She was one of a kind. The family would like to thank the staff and owner of Compassionate Senior Care for providing 24 hour care which allowed her to remain in her home until the end. A funeral Mass and a Celebration of Life will be held at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church 1230 S. Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans on Friday February 10, 2023 at noon. Mass will be said by family friend, Reverend Father Gerald Seiler. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 11am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow after the Mass at Hope Mausoleum on Canal Street in New Orleans.
