Charles Ramsey Obituary
RAMSEY Charles Clayton Ramsey. MD was born June4, 1928 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama diedOctober 15, 2008 in Greenville, Texas. Dr. Ramsey was the youngest of five children born to James Early Ramsey and Susan Roberta Baggett Ramsey. He graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1946. He worked as an electrician & saved his money to pay his way through college. He received his BS degree from the University of Alabama in 1953 and graduated from UA Birmingham Medical School in 1956. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Duke University in Durham, N.C. He subsequently completed his residency in psychiatry at LSU Medical School in New Orleans, LA., followed by a two year fellowship in Child Psychiatry at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, HI. During his years in private practice he also did psychiatric consultation work with the Veterans Administration and was later employed full time on the staff at the VA Hospital in New Orleans. He then transferred to the staff of The Gulf Coast Veteran's Health Systems in Gulf Port, MS. and lived in Biloxi. After retiring in January , 2001 he returned to his home in his beloved New Orleans French Quarter. For many years Dr. Ramsey was involved in the International Student Exchange program both in New Orleans and Biloxi. He hosted more than 30 students & became lifelong friends with them & their parents. He was in touch with many of them up to the last few months of his life. Charles had a lifelong passion for music. His real love was classical music played on his two seven foot Steinway Grand pianos. He had many, many gatherings in his home where he listened to music played by friends who were students, teachers, professors and concert pianist. These were memorable occasions enjoyed by a host of friends. He was known for his hospitality, being a gourmet cook, and gave generously of himself to all welcomed visitors. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin M. Ramsey of Tallahassee, FL, and Jessie A. Ramsey and wife Myra of Caddo Mills, TX, sister Faith R. Rushing and husband Roy and brother-in-law Albert May Jr. all of Northport, AL. He is survived by sister Doris R. May of Northport, AL, sister-in-law Ethel D. Ramsey of Tallahassee, FL. nine nieces and nephews, & many grand nieces and nephews & many dear friends from all over the world. It was Charles' desire that his body would be used for research and by his request his body was given to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. for teaching and research purposes.
