The Rev. Monsignor Crosby W. Kern obituary

Crosby Kern Obituary

KERN The Rev. Monsignor Crosby W. Kern, rector of the St. Louis Cathedral since 2003, died Friday at the age of 73. He was a lover of history who believed in the preservation of the past and worked toward this goal at both the St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Ursuline Convent. Besides restoring portions of the buildings and grounds themselves, he also became director of the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center, which brought the Vatican Mosaic Exhibit to New Orleans in 2006. Having been ordained in 1965, Msgr. Kern touched the lives of countless families in the parishes of St. Angela Merici and Our Lady of the Rosary, and in the general New Orleans area through his service to the community. He was also deeply committed to his own family who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his mother, Mary DiFatta Kern, his sister, Kay Kern, his nephew, Lonnie Varisco and his wife, Ninnette, and their two children, Natalie and William. Donations can be made to Notre Dame Hospice in his memory in gratitude for their loving care. Checks can be made out to: Notre Dame Hospice, 1000 Howard Ave. 10th floor, New Orleans, LA 70113. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at The St. Louis Cathedral, 615 Pere Antoine Alley New Orleans, LA 70116 on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in St. Anthony's Garden on the grounds of The St. Louis Cathedral. To view and sign the guest book, visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

It is with great sadness that we received the news about Msgr Kern. He was a dedicated priest and a wonderful Spiritual Director. He and his family remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

A man who was a father to me, not by priesthood, but by choice. His love was unconditional, and his advice was unlimited. He will be deeply missed, and never forgotten.

Mrs. Kern, Kay, Lonnie & Ninette,
I am so sorry to hear of Msgr. Kern's passing. I was cantor at St. Angela for many years while he was pastor. He was tough at times, but he always wanted the best out of people and I believe he got that. I loved him dearly. We had alot of special times like when he would take the musicians to brunch for our birthdays. He was generous and loved the people around him. He spoke of parents and Kay and especially Lonnie all the time as proudly as a father speaks of a son. He would light up when filling us in on Lonnie's latest accomplishments. I know he felt like a father to Lonnie and a grandfather to his children. He will be missed, to say the least. I am so sorry that we live so far now and I am unable to be there on Thursday. My family will continue to pray for him and all of you, especially during this Advent season.

TEDE HOEFELD AND THE HAND FAMILY

December 2, 2012

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was baptized as an adult 34 years ago, but left the Catholic Church, eventually joining a conservative evangelical church, where I remained for 21 years. But, finding the faith I had acquired unsatisfying, I looked for yet another change. I considered returning to the Catholic Church and as I was building the courage to go to a live Mass, I found the Daily Mass from St. Louis Cathedral on the Internet. Msgr. Kern was a daily fixture at the time and his love for the Church and our Savior was obvious. I enjoyed the simplicity of his homilies and the care and love he had for the people. Largely because of his influence, I started attending my home parish and received Confirmation this most recent Corpus Christi. I shall remain ever in debt to Msgr. Kern for his willing and loving acceptance of his role through which the Holy Spirit was allowed to work.

May the angels lead you into paradise, Msgr. Kern... thank you for your encouragement and kindness to me during my 2 years when I was cantor at St. Angela over 2 decades ago before I moved out of state, and when you were there again to be one of my references when I decided 2 years ago to move back home. Although I didn't get a chance to visit with you after you went into hospice, you were in my prayers each day. To Msgr. Kern's family: please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss. My prayers for peace and consolation are with you all.

Crosby...or Kern-Monsignor Kern lived next door to my family in Lakeview and all of us loved the "Kern family". He said funeral mass for Audrey Kirn Champagne in 2008 then Audrey Kirn Fain, my wife, in 2012. St Dominics was our church in Lakeview and it was wonderful to relive the street friendships with Crosby. I had planned for him to say mass at my funeral and am so sad he passed too early. God bless his family and to all, be assured we will all miss him until we are together again.

To the Kern Family,

Father Kern-Monsinnor Kern touched so many lives during his time in New Orleans. He was the assistant pastor at the grammar school that I attended. It was St. Andrew the Apostle in Algiers in late 60's. Our family stayed in touch with him since then. On my trips back to New Orleans, we would always stop at the cathedral to visit him. He was an inspiration. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
